Aww hon, I'm so sorry to hear about your guy. *hugs*

It's always a little surprising how much personality those little fish pack when people actually pay attention. I'm so glad Bellpepper had someone to pay attention. He was really blessed to share his life with you, and you him.

Ummm...

Whoops.

Bellpepper isn't dead. He looked dead earlier. But something is very, very wrong. He's now struggling sideways and upside down. And then he stops, and goes back to floating on the water motionless like he's dead again.

So... YAY he's alive, but oh my.... something is very wrong here.

Yeah... he's floating motionless like he's dead again. Then he'll kick around, and go back to being... dead kinda. I read up on swimbladder, says to give them a pea. At this point, I don't know if he can even eat... and this came on entirely too quickly. I mean, he was fine earlier, and now he's nearly dead. :(

Is there a walgreens nearby? I know they carry it, and they are 24 hours. If not, this would be worth hitting walmart for if you've got one of those.

Or maybe a friend has some? Our neighbor was able to lend us some when Seamus cut his paw.

I live in the boonies. The nearest open Walmart is an hour away, as is the Walgreens/CVS or any other store that's open.

Gonna have to wait till morning, unfortunately, and I'll run and get him some if he's still here. *sigh*

At least he's still alive! Kinda... I've seen fish with swim bladder disease before (mostly at petstores) and it does not look like fun. But hopefully there's a way to treat it quickly!

For some reasons Betas are really easy to get attached to. They have a surprising amount of personality for such wee little creatures. And yay for your boy having a nice, big tank!

He's got beaauuutiful colours. :)

I had a fish live with swim bladder disease for about 4 months. He would look dead half the day, and then I would feed him and he would come to life. Mine refused to eat the pea. Stubborn fish . . .

Update:

He's got way worse issues than just swimbladder now. His fins are now heavily frayed and eaten away, andhe appears to have fin rot. On top of that, he has a few white specks on him, so it appears that he also have ich/white spot disease (which I've heard ich and fin rot can go hand in hand sometimes).

I wonder if something lowered his immune system.

UGH, my poor guy. I'm on some fish boards getting some advice on what meds I can treat him with. He looks so pitiful.

A-w-ww...I'm sorry. I wouldn't use a lot of epson salt but I do put a little in each time I clean my tank...about a table spoon in a 30 gal. It is probably a parasite of some kind. They can make them swim funny too.....or the swim bladder thing also. I've had fish off and on since I was a kid....about 40 + years, am fairly knowledgable about their care... and sometimes they just die. You don't know why. They don't always look very sick. It just happens. They're very fragile and sometimes they come with something wrong from the fish store but it doesn't show up right away. They're inbred now more than imported and they're not always very strong. I'm really sorry it was implied that you're to blame somehow. I lose fish from time to time too, more often than I'd like, that's for sure. I treat them with what I think should be used, but often it's to no avail.

I'm really sorry about poor little Bellpepper.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. The fish boards are telling me to try Copper Safe (copper sulfate), which I've heard is good stuff to use. Mom's at work right now at the pet store, so she's picking some up and bringing it home with her.

I hope it works. Those fish are awesome. I had one for 4 years (and he was not a baby when I got him. I inherited him from a roommate). They sure can have personalities. He always swam over to see me when I went to the tank
