I'm dying here. I have those blisters between two toes, the skin is cracked and it itches so bad I just want to scratch until it bleeds. Ugh.

Any good remedies?

Give hydrogen peroxide or vinegar a try..It's really cheap too. It works wonders for people in my family. Though if your skin is cracked it might not be the best option it will sting like crazy.

I have had that on several occasions and what has helped me is sunshine. I am not aware of fungus that thrives in direct sunlight. What causes it in the first place is keeping your feet out of the sun and not letting them breathe. Now when I get athletes foot I take my shoes off and spend some time letting the sun do its thing.

And then there's letting the dog lick your feet . . .

I wonder if Blue Pwer Wash for Ears would also work on athletes foot. It works on ear fungus. This is a mixture of rubbing alcohol, boric acid powder, and gentian violet. I most recently used it to clean the brown goo out of Boris/Jasper's ears. I would think it would kill athlete's foot fungus too.

Thanks everyone... I had some fungus cream for the kids and used that and at least the itching has stopped for now... Phew.

Use the fungus cream twice a day for like a week at least, even if it seems better, just to make sure. And if you seem to get it a lot, Justin uses this Tinactin spray after his shower every day and he hasn't had it in a LONG time.. and he ALWAYS used to have it.

Keep an eye on it if you are using a clotrimazole or miconazole based cream or spray. a lot of fungus is turning up resistant to it. That's why a lot of the home remedy type treatments are coming back. Most work by changing the pH to something that fungus does not like.

that's interesting drmom, I didn't know that. Bet it's because people use the cream until their symptoms are better instead of using it for the recommended length of time.

Yes, I think it is because so many infections are partially treated and then come back. That is just asking for resistant strains to develop. It is why I hate that they use diflucan to treat vaginal yeast infections when there are only two effective thrapies for systemic fungal infections and the other one is amphotericin--which is nicknamed amphoterrible for good reason.

They told us in med school that funguses are hard to treat because they are a lot like us, from a biochemical standpoint. Point to ponder.

how would you treat a vaginal yeast infection? we use diflucan all the time. Of course, people come to the ER to be treated for their yeast infection, they're not very well going to be happy if we don't give them anything for their $500 visit that's usually free for them anyway and coming directly out of my taxes... but I digress.

Miconazole, Ketoconazole, or Clotrimazole cream or suppositories you can get at any drugstore. There is no excuse for giving an oral medication for a condition that can be treated perfectly well topically. It is like using a hammer to kill a mosquito.

I am not sure making people happy is the goal of treatment in an ER. LOL

I fail to see how a vaginal yeast infection is an emergency  But maybe that's because I've never *knocksonwood* had one . . . or maybe it's related to DrMom's little tidbit of info about how fungii and humans are similar . . .

It's not. At all. People on medicaid who get ER visits for free have such a strong sense of entitlement that they feel any slight discomfort merits a free trip to the ER. The worst one I had was someone that came in for an eyelash in their eye. Serious. They waited 6 hours, and by the time I got to them, it was out.
