I decided I really want to sell my Nikon 70-300mm lens and use the money for that to hopefully get a portrait lens. The 70-300mm lens isn't bad, but it just doesn't really work well for the type of photography I do.

So... It's a Nikon AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4-5.6G lens. It also comes with an HB-26 hood.

I don't have the original packaging for this lens since I threw that away when I was moving, but I don't use this lens very often so it's in pretty good condition. All of my camera equipment stays in a padded camera bag when it's not being used.

I've taken some amazing photos with this lens and it's got a pretty good zoom on it. While I do enjoy using this lens from time to time and it's come in handy, I just really really want a good portrait lens and can't afford to own both right now so I've decided it's time to part ways and use the money I get for this lens to go towards a good portrait lens. I should also mention that this particular lens has to be manually focused.

Does anyone know what's a good price I might be able to get for this lens in good but used condition? The lens I want I found for about $200, but I'm not sure the 70-300mm is worth that much so I figured I'd try and sell it for whatever I can and then save up the difference.

Here's a picture of what the lens looks like:

And here's a picture of what it looks like with the hood on:

Here's a few photos I've taken with this lens:

If it's still available in about a month I'll certainly want it:) We have to buy plane tickets for a trip back home next month and July is the month we only have my paycheck until school starts again. Otherwise I'd buy it now.

Obviously, sell it to someone else if they can buy it in the meantime though:)

is that compatible with the Nikon D40x? and is it user friendly? LOL
Yes, it is. :D
It is an AF-S lens, so it will auto-focus on the 40x. My in-laws have a Nikon D40x, and I used to use that lens on their camera all the time.

It's a great long distance lens outside. Inside, probably not so much.

I used to borrow it for my son's baseball games.
Worked great for that. :D

You just slap it on your camera body and go. :D

Amber-
If you sell it for $120, get yourself a 50mm f1.8 lens if you don't have one already. They run about $100 so they're relatively inexpensive and it's a staple lens in my collection.
My pics in my signature were all taken with my 50mm lens, and can be really sharp. The trick with it is finding it's really sharp point. Every lens has one. My 50mm's sharpest point is at f4.
It's a great outdoor portrait lens.

I, personally, use my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens for indoor portraits. It has a clarity for portraits and works awesomely with my flash.
That lens is a risky, though. With that lens, you either get an awesome copy of it or a crap copy.

Another great, awesome portrait lens is the 85mm f1.8 or f1.4 (the f1.4 is considerably more expensive, though).
If I was doing portrait photography, I think a 50mm f1.8 and an 85 mm f1.8 or f1.4 would be staples in my collection.
The 60mm macro lens is awesome, too, but I typically find that my tamron lens rarely leaves my camera body unless I go outside. Then I switch to me 50mm f1.8 lens. :D

hmmm REAAAAAAAAALLY

How much do you want for the lens Amber :)

Seriously I need a zoom lens and we were hoping to get one before our trip to disney in september but I had no idea about lenses and such for my camera LOL

if it works on the D40x and can autofocus it sounds perfect for me LOL. I mean I can manual focus but I do a lot of quick moment captures and am not good enough with the camera yet to use manual for quick shots lol

This one isn't the AF-S... it's just the regular AF so you do have to manually focus it which just takes a little practice. Hmmm.... if it's going for about $120 used... I can sell it to a chazzer for $100 plus whatever the shipping cost would be if that sounds ok. It will fit a D40x. I use it on my D60.

Rebecca, I'm debating between the4 50mm f1.8 lens and the AF-S 35mm f/1.8. Do you know if they have either of them with VR? I'm still kind of looking around

No, neither of those have VR but at that focal length and aperture speed, you won't need it. Also, keep in mind there is a new 50mm 1.8 af-s that is coming out this month that looks VERY promising.

My 35mm is my favorite lens. An absolute steal at $200.

thank you so much! hmmm... new 50mm coming? I think what I may end up doing is trying out both lenses to see which I prefer. But ya I noticed the 35mm was only $200 and I think that's a fabulous price

The 35mm 1.8 is FABULOUS. Per Ian's imput, I decided to go with that one and haven't been disappointed in the least with it. I use my 35mm for *everything*. All my pictures are taken with that lens.

I'm actually very glad I went with the 35mm instead of the 50mm, because when working indoors at gatherings, parties, idoor doggie shots, etc having the smaller focal length of the 35mm is so, so nice.

Actually, if anyone would like I'll probably have a Tamron 70-300 lens for sale.
