I just recently started running more...my knees/hips are actually allowing it!

Ran my first official 10k on thanksgiving & just signed up for a 15k at the end of this month.

Kinda didn't realize how soon that was, haha...most I have ever gone is 8 miles...so hopefully my knees will hold up. I have no clue how to train though...I am totally making rookie mistakes & training too hard, but its so hard to just go on an easy run. For some reason I enjoy feeling like I'm dying, LOL.

Anyhoo, just curious if anyone else runs. I tried going on a running forum, but they are all wayyy too crazy & hardcore & not nearly as fun as y'all!!

Wow, good for you!! I want to run a 5K at some point but that's about the most I have any desire to do, LOL.
Do you have any fitness clubs around you? My town hosts a HUGE marathon and one of the fitness centers actually advertises that they will help you prep for the marathon. I don't really know a lot about it either since I mostly just run for fitness rather than to really run a marathon.

When I was over 100 pounds lighter than I am today, I was on the high school cross country team. We raced 5K's. Normal daily workouts were 10+ miles. I know very well that feeling that you relish now. The workout/runner's high is quite a thing. Good for you and keep it up!

I'd love to start running again. Like DAB, I would need to lose a considerable more amount of weight before I'd consider taking it up again. I tried starting the couch to 5K program earlier in 2009, but realized very quickly that my nearly 40 year old knees and shins can't take the pounding from my weight.

Good for you!! Congrats on the 10k. I've never run a 10k race but have run that distance before. I've entered a 5k for the first time this past summer and it was the biggest natural high I've ever experience. I can see it becoming addictive.

I just got myself a new treadmill that has the iFit program as a feature. I'm thinking of ordering the 1/2 marathon memory card for it. I really need the treadmill in the winter too run, my lungs can't take the cold weather.

I love running, I'm back to being unfit atm but I know I want to start again this year.
When I was learnign I followed the Couch 2 5k programme to train for my first 5km. I love it.

hiking w/ a pack is a great way to lose weight. none of the hard impact issues of running & a good fat burning work out. despite a 5-6000 calorie a day, diet i lost almost 10# when we did the summer package at mountain warfare because in addition to the training we were hiking a MINIMUM of 15 miles a day for 17 days w/80-100# packs. we even a had weekend off in Reno where i ate $10 prime rib dinners for 2 meals a day.
if you start light & short & work up you'll be surprised how fast the weight comes off, but you'llhave to really pay attention to your feet so you don't tear them up bad.

I love running. I usually take my dogs to exercise them as well. I used to do a lot of running (track, etc.), but have cut back some over the years. My family and I have started running a half marathon together every April, so I'm starting to train for that again.

There are several training programs online if you'd like something to follow. Since running can be really hard on your joints, it's important to have good running shoes. A good running store can look at your foot and stride and recommend a good shoe for you. Also, cross-training (biking or swimming) can be helpful. Good luck!
