I'd totally hunt myself with a bow if it weren't for the extremely silly notion that you have to be out there at the buttcrack of dawn...WHAT is that about?
no kidding o_O

i LOVE deer jerky i could live off it lol. no one in my family hunts... well my uncle might but i'm not too sure. have a lot of fishermen though lol i LOVE fishing... i'm not taking a gun and shooting anything but i'm catching it lol does that count?

i can shoot a gun and bow decently. but i still feel bad about it.

I passed on a Moose trip this year because I wouldnt have been able to take my dogs.

I used to trade home brew for moose meat.

I would like to try moose sometime, I think. I've been pheasant hunting once and fed it to the dogs and deer hunting once, but we didn't even SEE a deer, much less take a shot at it. I think I'd rather just go and watch again anyway...I'm too much of a hippie to be ok with pulling the trigger myself.

Yep Gemp, I hunt, in fact I may have a dream elk hunt coming up. A friend of mine used to be an outfitter and he was taking a couple of guys up later this month. One guy may back out so I might get his place.

That sounds awesome. I hope you get the hunt! My uncle bow hunts and tried to teach me to use the bow when I was a kid, but I had no patience for it. Maybe I should try again now that I'm older.

Archery is about as close to a religious experience as I get. There is nothing like calling elk into bow range. It seems much more in touch with nature to me. Driving a 165 grain bullet @ 3000 feet per second, 300 yards into an animal seems kinda cold and separated. However, my freezer is full of bullet killed venison:rolleyes:

Where archery rocks, is fishing!!!

You all are making me enormously hungry hahaha. I have never hunted, but really want to. My dad used to hunt pheasant. I love duck, deer, elk, buffalo, etc... I really want to try moose. What kind of taste does it have??? I've never eaten pheasant because when I was a kid I was chicken to try it and that wild turkey sounds so good too. Has anyone tried bear? What does it taste like? I'm so curious. I'm pretty much a try everything once kind of person, especially when it comes to meat. Brendan really wants to pick up hunting. I'm getting a toller so we're definitely for sure going to get into duck hunting... but I know he's aching to take down a deer.

I've heard that some people hunt alligator gar by night fishing with bows and barbed arrowheads. I read that the record is something like 270 lbs. Those fish are scary! *shudder* And there's a ton of giant ones in Texas. Honestly, I'm more disturbed about swimming in gar-inhabited lakes than shark-infested waters.

For those who don't know what alligator gar are, check this link out. Think of a 6-foot-long fish with an alligator's head:

Yikes Gempress those things are terrifying, they almost look to bizarre to be real. I'm sending that link to all of my fishing friends, I've never heard of these before

The biggest one I've ever seen was probably just short of six feet. Fortunately it was safely in the bed of a pickup, and not in the water with me! *phew* I've had friends who have encountered large alligator gar while swimming, and I can't imagine that. Ugh. Give me sharks any day.

I have! I've eaten black bear shot by my uncle. I find it has the "gamiest" taste of all the meats I have eaten (including venison, elk, buffalo, moose, etc) but I think it tastes quite good! A lot of people don't prefer the meat (it's not that they dont lie it, just isn't their favourite).

Bear meat can be very good if taken up high in meadows where they only eat grass and berries. The ones not to eat are the ones down low that eat mostly salmon etc.

Speaking of hunting, you might check out the fine piece in the latest (November,2007) issue of National Geographic Magizine, titled "Hunters: For Love of the Land."
The photography is beautiful, which is the usual for National Geographic, and the story treats hunters fairly, which is often unusual for most of the mainstream media. The story covers hunters as true conservationists, and was written by hunter Robert M. Poole, the former executive editor of National Geographic. It deals sensitively with dogs, birds, deer, and worries over declining numbers of young peaple to carry on the tradition.
If you need ammo to deflect criticism of your chosen activity,or to counter animal rights activists, this peace is a good starting point.

I was just curious: how many Chazzers hunt? If so, what's you're favorite type of game?
I only hunt Pheasant. I go pretty much every Sat during small game season.
Yesterday...too warm and a bit wet, same thing as last Sat when the season started. It doesn't make for a good hunting IMO. It is much nicer when there is a little chill in the air and dry.

It's why I wanted my breed of dog, I got her to hunt birds. Zoe is an English field type setter know as a Llewellin Setter in the US (think of Old Roy, but try not to feed it, lol). She comes from one of the top breeders in the country.

I trained her myself. If anyone is interested in getting a dog started I can help. The training starts early and the first year is very important.

I've seen a few get dogs and they have no exposure to live birds until 6 months or later....not good.

Where I hunt property is limited. We prefer 'pointers' over 'flushers' in hopes to keep our birds from being run off onto State Land.
