Because of the neutered male-thread, I was wondering if there are owners on Chaz that have intact males and why you chose not to neuter them.

Boy isn't neutered because I got him intact when he was already seven years old, and he is just really calm so I don't see a reason to fix him. He doesn't even react if both females next door are in heat.

He is a mutt and a rescue dog so I would never dream of breeding him, but I have to explain that where I live it is a completely different situation then the US. We luckily don't have an overpopulation problem, and there are rarely litters in shelters. Because of that, people look different at neutering, it isn't a standard procedure, especially not with male dogs.
The only way Boy would breed was if someone would throw a female in heat over my (high) fence :D
What I want to say is that castration is the solution to an overpopulation problem, but because that's not an issue here I have a completely different view against neutering my dogs and take other things into consideration, and the possibility that they would breed isn't one of them.

But the different views really interests me so I'm really curious if there are people on this board that chose not to neuter their dog.

Ronin was intact for as long as he was because, well... he was a show dog, and he was a good intact male. He wasn't hard to own as an intact dog - he listened well, he didn't inappropriately mark, he didn't try to escape to find girls... he was fine.

Beau's a show dog.

Well, ex show dog, lol. ;)

He finished up and my parents are unsure what to do with him as of now so they're holding off on anything.

We've had intact males before- a working field lab and a mutt. Neither were bad intact males and no chance of oops litters here. We never saw a reason to neuter either of them. We've had absolutely no accidents and after reading a lot on neutering I see little to no health benefits for neutering. It's an elective surgery that I probably won't have done unless its a health reason.

So long as someone is sure a dog won't get out and get another pregnant, then I see nothing wrong in keeping intact dogs.

dodger was neutered late...

he was bought as a show dog, but it didnt work out.
because he wont be bred again i had him neutered, better for his overall health, i dont want him to have prostate cancer and i dont want to risk his heart doing an eneuter if he was to get testicular cancer at a later stage in life.

Spy is intact.

Why?

I see no reason to neuter him. Yet.

I do not show, nor do I plan on breeding. The only reason I would breed would be if we tried him on sheep and he was ZOMGAMAZING:yikes::yikes::yikes:. Which is unlikely lol.

So until he is fully matured, probably somewhere between 2-5, I will just sit tight and hold off on the surgery. I know both his parents, his father in particular, are very slender and long-legged. Dogs neutered later in life tend to grow bulkier and more thick-set, which is partly why I am leaving him intact. I fear he will injure himself because of his thin legs so I may as well let them get as thick and strong as they can!

Reggin is not neutered... yet, because I dont feel like he is old enough... yet.

I plan on neutering him when he is 36 months old. He is 15 months now. I dont believe dogs are fully mature until they are 3 years old.

Tyr is intact mainly because I don't like putting my dog through surgery and removing internal organs. I also haven't decided yet if he's going to breed.

Scooter is not neutered yet. He is the only one of the boys that is still intact. Scooter has been very sick his whole life. He has had one medical problem after another, and we've almost lost him several times. He's also reacted very badly to many different medications. The vet is very worried that Scooter may not be able to handle the anesthesia and so we've opted to at least wait a little while, and re-evaluate him in a few months.

I was waiting until Stryder turned 2 (adult) to decide.. but now its like its been so long what's the point when he has the same chance of getting cancer with or without them. And seeing how Kibas coat and structure turned after being spayed.. I wanted him to fully grow out and such.

Same here. I have had a long discussion with my vet about it and we both agreed that so long as I feel comfortable with it the boys' lives aren't going to be any better or worse with their man jewels. I've noticed Spanky really filling out the last little while and Bandit is a brick house.

My horse was gelded late too. He was gelded before I got him but wow. He is one chunky guy. There is no mistaking him for a mare. I like the look of a thicker animal. Call it selfish or stupid but I'm not getting them neutered until they are finished growing.
