I have a seven week old Jack Russell puppy who's just training like a pro, until today. Today, we were learning the word Lay (aka Down) I decided to let our rather grumpy BC/GSD mix in on the fun. They were both doing really well but AMY looked at him and paid less and less attention to me. She started pissing him off, from the looks of it, purposely. She would jump on his tail and then go back into a sit. I guess she noticed that he wouldn't perform if he was busy growling at her. I noticed this and instead of scolding Malachi for growling at her, I reprimanded her for breaking her sit. She deserved it.

Next thing I knew she got up and left! I couldn't believe it! I ended the training session and ignored them both just because I didn't know what else to do.

The last thing I need is a seven week old prima donna. Help?

I think it's better to train Amy on her own, because puppies are very easily distracted!!! any excuse to play!! ;)

Yeah, but Malachi just has to participate. He just loves treats and praise like any dog. All I have to do is start saying commands and he practically beams into the room saying. "Look! Look! I'm sitting! I'm doing it! Gimme treat please! Oh please!" *sigh*

I put two of the dogs outside and train the other one in the house. They are fine with that. If you don't have a yard you could give Malachi a bone or something to work on while you train.

Oh the trials of being a good parent ;)! My only suggestion is to shut Malachi out?!! ANd then do a bit of training with him afterwards so he doesn't feel left out!! :)

Yeah. We have property where some untouchable line that's not electric or gas runs through the middle. Some... weird line. I don't even know what it is. If we build a fence there we'll get fined big time. So we usually just tie him out and I guess I'll just have to do that. I was hoping they would be able to do something together. Malachi is disliking Amy more and more.

If Malachi is the senior dog, be sure to give him his training session first, then let him take 'recess' in another room or outside if you've got a good fenced in area for him while Amy has her session.

I agree. They all need their time alone for training and everything else. Today Kona was doing some training on the screened-in porch, CJ got to go for her favorite car ride, and Max got to take a nice walk. They were all so happy because they all felt special.

I only have one dog. Big round of, "Ahhhh how sad for Maui." :(

Missing in his daily training is the motivation competition can provide. Sometimes we borrow our friend's dogs to teach "Come!".

For those days when you have 10 minutes to train. (When your cutie pie JRT is a little older? Depends on the dog.) Put both dogs in a "Wait!" and walk (slowly) as far away as they can tolerate. (Add distance later) Yell, "Come!" don't use their names. The dog that gets there & sits first, gets the cookie. The other dog, regardless of age or prominence, gets a love pat and praise.

If one dog keeps winning. Help the other out a bit by waiting for them to start sniffing around (maybe you throw treats on the ground?). When the slow dog is closer, yell the command.

(Sometimes when I re-read my posts I realize... "This dog is turned into my whole life!")

Have fun! :D
