This is a thread for those of us who have rescued (or been rescued by ;)) a dog. It could be a foster, a dog you own now, or a RB dog. Share your stories, pictures, etc. And if you have a rescued cat or guinea pig or other animal, tell us about them, too! It doesn't need to be an animal formally rescued, through a shelter or something, but can be any animal pulled out of a bad situation and helped.

I'll start....

Just over a year ago I rescued Middie from a bad situation - he was on a chain most of his short life and completely miserable, yet, strangely, bonded to me. I forked over enough money for him that his owners wouldn't refuse, and brought him home the same day. Now he lives in relative luxury, and though he could do without the baths, he's pretty happy and spoiled.

I also have a rescue-kitty, Tom, who was dumped by his owners into a shelter as an older kitty. He stole my mom's heart, and I wasn't leaving without a cat, and there you go. We're pretty darn glad he's around - he's such a sweet, loving cat. More like a dog, really, in the way he always wants to be petted and loved on and talked to. The people who had him before are missing out.

Thunder - He was found behind a BP gas station, in a dumpster, with his littermates. The vet estimated them at less than 2 hours old. The lady that found them bottle fed and raised them and I adopted him at 12 weeks old.

Scooter - He was advertised on the radio as "free to a good home", we went to see him and found that he was being kept outdoors with no shelter at only 6 weeks old... in mid January when the temps were below zero.

Emmy & Buddy - A very long story, but rescued from a very bad situation.

None of the other dogs are technically rescues. We have quite a few cats, and frequently foster them. Most of them were feral or raised from birth after their mothers were killed. I won't include pictures and individual stories since there are so many of them!

Nolu... you forgot the little kittens (and no, this is not a shameless attempt for a cute kitty-group-shot )

Awww...BN... your pics made me feel fuzzy.

Well, first there was little potbelly Casanova. We have had him for awhile and even though it wasn't always easy... he will always hold a special place in my heart. Someone tied him to a truck at a gas station. Thankfully he was found.

There there's little miss Tawney. Such a doll.

The kittens we found abandoned in a box in summer along a shut down road. I couldn't find a good picture with both of them in it... as they look sick in most of them and it breaks my heart.
Little Josephine. She is special. Very small, very slow, and misses things a lot. We kept her and she is the perfect companion for Pumpkin.

Mittenz, RIP. I am still sorry we couldn't save you.

Porter. Rescued him from a bad situation... I am glad everything worked out as it did and we were able to keep him. I still miss him the most and honestly, sometimes regret not failing Foster 101. But he is in a great home and I couldn't be happier with the family he lives with.

Then of course, Mr. Pissy aka Pumpkin. He is the biggest lovebug ever even though he looks po'ed all the time. He wandered around our house and never left. We tried to find the owners, flyers, calls to shelters and vets- nobody claimed him. He was pretty skinny... a hurricane came along and he made his way up and into the bed.

I guess T-Bone is a rescue, too. Her and the rest of her litter were dumped in an old abandoned house. Some kids playing around found them and told their parents, who brought them to a shelter. She was the last one left... I don't know how you could not want her. I saw her... sat down, she crawled on my legs and licked my cheek. Deal sealed. And yes, she is spoiled.

I haz no group shots. They move too fast. Amber does, so I am stealing one of hers... hope she forgives me, lol.

My foster kittens:

Fiona, Morrigan, and Nolan. They were abandoned as newborns, maybe a few days old, and found freezing in a shed. Now they belong to Friends of Homeless Animals and will be up for adoption in a few weeks.

Kenai, Mastiff x Lab. Chained & abused. Rescued at 7 years old. Passed away last year. =(

Layla, Fawn Boxer. Left in a crate for 9 hours a day. Ripped all of her teeth out and her face open. Too strong willed for her owners. I fostered her.

Well, I'll start with Ashten and Siam. They came from some lady who had a LOT of cats. They were all taken good care of though, and their living situation was clean. However there were two unruly children in that home and they used to be really rough with Siam and Ashten, so they would hide on top of the kitchen cabinets! Ashten is now deceased, but Siam, the old bag,err..I mean Her Majesty, still lives on.

Roo - came from Prince William Animal Shelter. My sister's ex boyfriend called him the "walking toupee". He is now deceased, age unknown.

Rose - came from Prince William Animal Shelter. Was given up because the children wouldn't take care of her. She was approximately 6 1/2 years old when she died.

Kanga - came from Prince William Animal Shelter. Still have her.

Cece - came from a girl who didn't want her anymore. Still have her.

Sampson - came from Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue. Died from complications due to scarring on lungs, and an enlarged heart. I think he was three.

Benji - my sister happened upon him. His owners allowed him to roam to a certain shop; some nights he would sleep in the parking lot. Other times when they actually bothered to pick him up they would beat him. My sister brought him home and he's been here ever since (three years ago).

Petey - came from Fauquier SPCA. He was born in a shed and the lady had too many cats so she surrendered him. He was at the SPCA for six months.

Ok that's all of mine.

I really could take up days on this subject, but I figured I'd just share one story.

Jaeger was a little deaf dane pup. I got a call about him and when the volunteer told me the city he was in, I already knew what his story was. I had picked up numerous danes in this city (4 hours away from me) and they all went back to the same breeder. Only difference was, this time the breeder herself called rescue. She called us before ditching this one at the shelter.

So, I call her. She says there is something wrong with this white dane and she wasn't sure she could sell him. I politely tell her that if she's having so many dogs that aren't selling or ending up in shelters, perhaps she's doing something wrong and maybe it was time to find a real job. But anyways...

I drive the four hours to pick him up. There's nothing wrong with him, per se, but he is obviously deaf. I look around the breeders property and I am horrified. She lives less than 2 miles from the animal shelter, and I cannot imagine why they allow this to continue. There are dogs packed in every avaiable spot. The house is booming with dogs barking and I literally see a head in every window. Outside there are 10 X 10 lots with 4 or 5 danes each in them, feces everywhere, and the smell, the flies, omg. Dogs are fighting, dogs are jumping fences, it's just a total nightmare.

The breeder is obviously drunk, she is staggering and slurring telling me how sad she is whenever a puppy leaves her. I grab Jaeger and head to my car as fast as I can. The smell is making me gag.

It dawns on me that I don't see any other puppies, so I start to scan the property and there, in a delapidated shed covered with a tarp, I see them. All sizes, all colors, all crammed into another small area. I cringe.

I get to my car, toss Jaeger in the crate and make a beeline to the A/C building up the road. They promise me they'll "Look into it" and I emphasize that this is an emergency.

I get Jaeger home and bathe him immediately. He's a sweetie, and he showers me in kisses almost non-stop. He bonds to me quickly and we start hand signals right away.

I am interviewed by the local Fox station the next week, and Jaeger makes his debut appearance. I get calls about him - tons of calls, but none pan out. He's extra special and if I cant' find the perfect home, I'm fine with keeping him myself.

Later on, I get a call from a friend I had met at a dog fundraiser. She says they're wanting to adopt another dane and I say "How do you feel about deafies?" She seemed interested, so we set up a date for her to meet Jaeger.

It was love at first sight, and they adopted Jaeger.

My heart broke letting him go, but it was great to know his new family and that I could see him whenever I wanted. The family kept me up to date with Jaeger, and then we lost touch for a while. I was very saddened to recieve a phone call last year that Jaeger had gone to the Bridge. He had bloated and torsioned and while he survived that, he suffered an allergic reaction to the suture and his body began to have severe autoimmune responses. He was started to bleed internally and though they tried valliantly to save him, he did not make it.

RIP Sweet Jaeger, baby blue eyes. You were loved by so many!

Here I am with Jaeger:

On a side note, the breeder WAS shut down and all of her dogs seized. The ones that were salvageable were dispersed to various rescue groups, with our group taking in as many as we could.

My "favorite" foster story.

Stewart was a happy go luck JRT. His family dyed him red, which turned out pink (I am ok with that) for Canada day and decided to take him to the local celebration. The let their son, aged 12, walk him. Then the fire works start and he bolts. Child can't hold him and he runs out on the road and gets hit by a car.

No so far with the story the humans have made some bad decisions but nothing I would revile them far. But then...

The child runs over to his hurt dog and picks him up. Stewart (who it turns out had a broken pelvis) bites the kid. So they turn the dog over to rescue because he bit the kid!

Stewie came here after he healed up. He was a happy dog and found a great home.

All 3 of my rabbits, my 3 hamsters, AND my mouse were also rescued!

AND my RES (Turtle) was rescued from an abusive owner so I must get his pictures too :)
