Do you plan on sticking with your breed? Or branching out?

Just trying to add to the many new threads popping up! (yay for activity!)

For those of you who have a breed, do you plan on sticking to the breed you have, or would you like to try other breeds? Which breeds? What makes you want to try those breeds as opposed to staying with what you have? Or vice versa, what makes you want to NOT try new breeds?

Discuss!

I don't know. I could stay in Tervs specifically or Belgians in general and be happy forever, but there's a lot of other breeds I could live with happily too. I hope not to have to get another dog for 12+ years, so I have a long time to waffle. I think it's because I live with one dog, not a whole breed, and so as long as that dog is what I want, I'm happy.

Nope. While I'd be perfectly content with the right Yorkie or Silky, I'm not currently seeking another one out. Too many other breeds I want to try!

I do planned to be involved with Mini Aussies for the rest of forever, but with other dogs in the mix as well! May just be a rescued mix, a random dog who finds there way here as many have, or another breed from a breeder. We will see when the time comes! :)

I do plan on always having a boxer, but I want to try other breeds as well... no real reason other than wanting to experience different things!

I'm definitely a variety is the spice of life kind of person. There's a number of dog breeds and types I'd like to experience.

It also helps that I have no idea what Hank really is so I can't duplicate him anyways.

I plan on owning more of my current breeds (though maybe not labs), but I also plan on owning others.

Haha, good timing. A friend of mine has spent the last week yelling at me because I'll most likely be venturing into another breed.

For those of you who have a breed, do you plan on sticking to the breed you have, or would you like to try other breeds? Which breeds? What makes you want to try those breeds as opposed to staying with what you have?
Yes, I do plan on sticking to the breed I own, but I'll also be trying new breeds. I think I'll always have two dogs at a time (possibility of three if the third is a mellow small-ish dog). No matter what, I want one of my dogs to be a German Shepherd, and I do think I'll always have one. But I've only ever owned one dog, and there are several other breeds that possess traits I look for and enjoy. Plus, I like variety, and I don't necessarily just want one type of dog, aesthetically or temperamentally.

Other breeds I'd like to one day own include a Malinois and English Shepherd, plus maybe a LH Whippet, a Silken, or a Cavalier. There's a lot that I like about each of those breeds, but the reasons why vary greatly. What makes me want to try these new breeds? It's not much different from when I chose a GSD as my first breed - I like them :D And honestly, when/if I do go into these new breeds, I'd actually be making a much more informed decision than I did when I chose GSDs lol.

I would love to add another lhw in the next year or so. Gimmick is exactly what I wanted, and he's perfect.
No more coydogs. No hybrids of any sort.
No more guardy breeds after Quid.

I do want to try a bc or possubly a koolie down the line. But I think I'm sticking with sighthounds and herders

I want to try other breeds, but since I can always see myself owning at least 3 dogs at a time, it will probably be like 2 Finkies and 1 other. For now, I'm planning on adding a Buhund within the next few years. Other than that, I have no idea about other breeds. Bit obsessed with the Buhunds at the moment hahaha.

What makes you want to try those breeds as opposed to staying with what you have? Or vice versa, what makes you want to NOT try new breeds?

I honestly think that I could be happy with the Finkies forever, but I do want experience heavily training and being successful putting high titles on other types of dog. The Buhunds seem to be a good mix of independence with a bit of herder brain (since they are a herding spitz). One breeder I spoke to said that she and others believe that they are the most biddable of the spitz breeds, so that will be different LOL.

I will not have any more corgis, but I never really considered them my breed anyway.

As for more JRT, well, your guess is as good as mine. If I could be assured that they would be just like Siri, they are all I would ever own!! But I know they aren't all like her. And also I want pocket pets without the stress that goes into a pocket pet and terrier household. But on the other hand, most of the other breeds I want wouldn't be a great mix with pocket pets either.

...so who knows...

I do know that I will have other breeds. It is just a matter of whether it will be JRT + other breeds, or just other breeds.

But like Red said, I have waffle room! I know that I won't own two terriers at once, and Siri has a good 20 years (at least!) left in her :p

For me personally, no. I did a lot of research and have spent a lot of time with my breed. The more I work with them, the more addicted I get. We were talking about all of the scabs on my hands tonight and DH goes: "You know, you are a REALLY crazy dog lady, now. YOU EXPECT TO GET BIT. There's something wrong with that." :rofl1: He's probably right, but I can't imagine it any other way! I have considered other herders in the past, but there is always something that hangs me up. Now that I have a really nice, drivey girl I don't really even think about other breeds.

As far as our family as a whole, I think we will branch out a touch. DH really loves American Bulldogs and I finally pinned down a fabulous breeder. So there's a possibility there. He also wants a bird dog, so there will be another touch of variety. If we get an American Bulldog, I would probably trial a bit with him. I really do like the breed, but I have an issue with a lack of biddability. The bird dog is touch and go. He will be DH's, so I won't intervene much but may consider hunt trials if he isn't interested and the season is slow.

DH may overrule me, but I wouldn't seek out another Boxer. The plan is for an American Bulldog to fill that void (if we find we need bully love :p), but who knows. I would really like to keep our numbers low, so we may have to make choices.

Now that I have Journey, I can't picture myself without an Aussie. I wish I'd gotten one years ago. So yes, I definitely plan on sticking with Aussies. And preferably an Aussie and a Toller always. But if there is room for more, I do like having a variety and there are other breeds I'd like to have at some point in addition. Mostly other herding breeds but there are a few other breeds that cross my mind once in a while as well. So we'll see what happens. But yeah, I will definitely make sure I have Aussies and more than likely Tollers forever. Good individuals of both breeds fit my needs so well. But I'm kind of having a big dog dilemma too. I love the safe, secure feeling owning a Doberman gives me when I'm out for a walk. Even if Journey feels intimidating sometimes, she's not lol. I've never not had either a Rottweiler or a Doberman in my life and I just can't picture having a household of only cute fluffy dogs haha.

Well....before I joined this forum I was pretty dead set on another Border Collie. Border Collies forevarr no other breed will do!
But now I have some pretty major Koolie want. Everyone's Koolies on here are just so fantastic.
And Kelpies....just because with Rig I've done so much research into the breed and they seem alright too.

While I admire a plethora of other breeds, I just don't think many are right for my needs/wants in a dog right now. I like a dog that I can take just about anywhere and not have to worry, and one that works because they genuinely enjoy learning and like to make me happy, not just because of the food at the end. And of course can keep up on hikes and pull their own weight if necessary.

Vizsla forever <3 I made so many mistakes training Penn and she still manages to be amazing.. next dog is pretty much promised to be a fab herding breed as long as there's a little girly in the litter for me but it will always rotate Vizsla- herder in my world I think.
