Ele passed away 2 weeks ago, she was euthanized. We don't know what happened to her and was hoping someone would be able to help us. Here is a timeline of what happened on the day we had to take her in to be euthanized.

10a.m. Wednesday morning: Ele was given a 5-1 booster shot (which was her last one and she had been given 2 times previously), 1 oral wormer, and 1 wormer via an injection.

All day Ele was fine, she ate and drank normal and acted just as she usually did just not barking and that was about all I noticed that was wierd about her. She was crated quite a bit though because she got diarrhea last time she was wormed so I didn't want her to get it on the carpet.

8 p.m. on wednesday I noticed she was drooling really heavily in her crate, which I thought was pee. I took her outside and she was sort of unstable on her feet.

8:30p.m. Ele was drooling severely, was stumbling when she walked, when she sat her head cocked to the right side and she would fall over. She was shaking and would have what looked like seizures. I called the normal vet and got the answering machine and then contacted the emergency vet that my vet's machine reccomended.

10p.m. Ele went to sleep. I could not get her to wake up or stand or anything anymore. I couldn't get ahold of Mark or find a babysitter and with no car I just had to do the best that I could do. I kept her warm and tried to give her some fluids and tried canned dog food but she wouldn't take any of it.

12a.m. on thursday I was able to get her into the vets but at that time she was completely unresponsive, she would twitch her eyes if you petted her but that is about all. We immediately made the decision to have her euthanized because the vet told us that there was nothing that they could do they could put her on iv's and do bloodwork but basically they said there was no way she would survive. So we sat with her for a couple minutes and then they came in and put her to sleep.

We are devastated over this and just want some answers. Our vet has not talked to us since then and we have left a bunch of messages I drove up there and he was busy and couldn't talk to me. Our trainer thinks that she definetely had a reaction to the shots because they gave her stuff like heartguard and that is lethal to collies (which I didn't know). I hope we can find out what happened to her because I really need peace with this I have had a horrible time excepting that she is gone.

The emergency vet said that she was poisoned by something in the house but I have searched the house, and yard, and there is nothing that she could have gotten into. I have the house kid proofed and all chemicals are put up high. I didn't spray anything either and there was nothing in the yard. Then after I told them that they said she must have had a genetic defect (they said a liver shunt because she was so small).

If anyone has any input please let me know. I am so upset over this and having to put this baby down. She was just a baby and did not deserve that.

OMG, I am so sorry! That does sound like poisoning. My poodle got into slug bait when I was a child and had the EXACT same symptoms. Any pellet slug bait around? Also, the vet didn't use any Ivermectin on her in the wormer...I hope?

Oh God Julie. I am so terribly sorry. My heart aches for you. What a horrible way for her to go. Is it too late to take her body elsewhere for an atopsie? That would be the only way to know. It could have been the vaccines. It's horrible that your vet won't talk to you...just unforgiveable! I wonder if he feels some kind of responsibility and is afraid to talk to you. It does sound too, like poisoning. But what could it have been? Are there any creeps that could have left something in your yard? But the other dogs didn't get into anything. I have a creepy feeling it could have been the vaccines. My heart goes out to you and your family. I'm just so very sorry.

I'm so sorry for your loss Julie! I don't have any experience with Collies and their reactions or anything, but my heart breaks for you. I know how you must feel. My heart goes out to you and your family! Keep us Chazzers in mind when you need a lift, or just someone to talk to
((((((hugs))))))

Here are the symptoms for Ivermectin reaction:

Ivermectin toxicity

Symptoms of ivermectin toxicity include:
depression
unsteady gait
dilated pupils
vomiting
drooling
tremors
coma
or even death.1,2

I have a gut feeling that the injectable form of wormer they give could have been Ivomec and they messed up and they know it. Go in there and ask for a copy of the record of what was given!

I am so, so, sorry about your poor girl. Such a sad tragedy :( I agree with some of the others who said that it maybe related to the shots or Ivermectin. Julie a 5 in 1 shot is alot at once to, I would investigate your vet further.........

Thanks everyone! We are still very upset about Ele and mainly because the emergency vets blamed us for what happened and said WE did something. I have searched the house and yard and haven't found anything. All the dogs are let out on the same chain so if she got into it then they had the ability to get into it as well and they never got sick or anything at all. The yard was clear though I didn't find anything. Her body was taken a couple days after she was euthanized to be cremated so we can't have an autopsy and I considered doing it but the vet told me it was quite expensive to get one done.

The wormers that they said they used were drancid and strancid (sp?). I have the stuff written down somewhere on what shots she was given in the 5-1 but I wrote it down on a receipt and can't find it. I was able to talk to 1 nurse the next day who was helpful but since then I haven't gotten anywhere with them.

I just feel horrible and so responsible for this and so many questions are still running through my head. I wished that I could have gotten her to the vets sooner, and I had a better vet to begin with. I think I would feel better if my vet would atleast talk to me. My trainer has suggested a really good vet and we're going to take the girls there and they said they would see about somehow getting all three of the dog's files (including Ele's) and they would be able to tell me more.

That is so sad! :( :( :(

I think it sounds like a horrible reaction to one of the shots, probably the wormer.

Oh Julie, I'm so sorry... I agree, switch vets and have the records transferred and see what they can find.
That's awful... I can't believe the vet didn't know not to give Heartguard. =<

Julie, don't blame yourself! Stuff like this happens and it's very unfortunate, but at least you gave Ele a great home for the time she was here :(

If it was strongid-t and droncit that was given then it probably wasn't the wormer. Neither of those contain Ivermectin and are routine wormers for rounds/hooks and tapes.

I am so sorry for your loss:(

im so sorry for your loss...
unfortunatly it sounds exactly like symptoms of poisening and from what you describe is likely a reaction to either the heartguard or the 5 in 1 (our vet doesnt do multiples even in larger breeds due to the higher lieklyhood of complications)
id definatly get a copy of your vets record (or the record itself) and either do some reaserch into what is involved with any of the meds given that day or have another vet take a look over it!

PLEASE dont blame yourself, this doesnt sound like naything you have done! instead i think it was just a very unfortunate reaction!

I am sorry to hear about ele.

heartgard does not contain a high enough dose of ivermectin to be harmful to herding breeds/collies. Many people do not use it for fear, but it has been proven safe.

It sounds like a reaction. Whiskey almost died from the vacs. I am so so very sorry for your loss. I do not approve as to how your vet is reacting to this. I think I would go back in and demand answers.
That poor baby and poor you having to go through that. HUGS to you I am so very sorry for your loss.
