OMG!

I"m SOO SORRY to read this :(

Yes, Collies are VERY sensative to ANY heartguard you give them,
Shelties used to be until they developted a new type over here that also helps prevent against heart worm.

We dont even sell or give heartguard here in Ontario anymore.

If its not too late and not to expensive for you - I would get an otopsy done on Ele but a GOOD vet. That is really the only way you can know for sure what happened. Also with an otopsy result you can, if wanted go to court to get your vet bills expelled(minus the otopsy).

That is just horrible :( again, I'm so sorry...

Well unfortunetely Ele was already taken in for cremation before we thought about the autopsy. The emergency vet said that it would be really expensive to get the autopsy done and at the time I believed that she had gotten into something. I mean I have searched this whole house top to bottom atleast a dozen times, and so has Mark. We searched the entire yard, the front yard (which she never goes in the front yard anyway), the side of the house which she could reach from her tie out, and also the whole backyard and the alley and garbage (thinking maybe somebody was able to slip her something and then tossed it out). We always watch through the back door though so I would see if someone came into the yard though. She was happy and healthy up until I noticed she wasn't feeling good. We never had a problem with her at all it's just really hard to believe that she was posioned (sp?) or it was a genetic defect that just so happened to pop up the same day as the vaccinations and worming. I don't think we'll ever know now though but this whole situation has left me so upset I cancelled Holly's spay with that vet and we have another vet that we are going to go to get Holly spayed.

That vet has always been great with me though we have been going to him with all our pets and he has always been friendly and honest and really helpful I just don't see why he is now ignoring us and not wanting to deal with us when he could have just talked to me a few minutes and tried to help me. I would really love answers to what happened to Ele but I guess all we can do is speculate on what happened to her. It was just completely devastating to us to have to put a puppy down that was that young.

I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through. As you say, you can't get any further answers so I think it's best know that Ele is in a better place with our pets. I know Ele loved you as much as you loved her.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

The symptoms given do sound like those stemming from toxicity.

Vaccine reactions tend to occur within 30 minutes of the injections. And I've never heard of such a reaction to Droncit or Strongid(which I'm assuming is what the dog was given based on your spelling).

I had a sheltie pup die very very similarly about 11 years ago. She was three months old. It turns out there was a poisonous type of plant in our yard that we did not know about. My friend was into gardening and knew a lot about plants and came out to our yard and found it. I'd try to have everything looked at if I were you...

I'm sorry about your loss, it's hard to go through.

I am so sorry for your loss..

Are you aware of the MDR1 gene in collies/shelties/aussies?
Was Ele ever tested to see if she was a carrier?

My aussie tests out 'mutant/mutant' for the MDR1 gene, which means she is a carrier, would pass it on to her offspring, and there is a long list of drugs that are big no no's that would probably kill her.

Ivermectin (as in Heartguard) is only one of them.

I would highly suspect and would bet my life on it, that she had a toxic reaction to the vac's given to her (an mdr dog could possibly take it once or twice, and then not tolerate at another point) and the Ivermectin.

If your vet was giving your collie Ivermectin (as in heartguard), sorry but they are severely under informed and boy I would be ON that guys doorstep telling him so.

I would honestly ask them if they 'knew" of the MDR1 gene in the above mentioned dogs, bet he hasn't.

Some of the drugs that are no no's are listed on this website
www.busteralert.org (I think that's the site)

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss

Edited .. found the original post to be confusing with mention of droncit and strongid and later Heartguard - I deleted my post.
