I collect vintage wood boxes. The finished kind. Some are music boxes but only because I like the wood, the finish or the carving.

Okay . . . now that's just more strangeness. I don't stick to vintage, though, just wooden boxes that I love. My favorite is one in the shape of an oak tree. And the one my Dad made and gave to my Mom when they were dating.

What's scary is it doesn't even surprise me anymore....

I just like the feel and the look and the richness of these boxes. Especially rosewood and the hand crotched wood (Louie, not THAT kind of hand crotched).

I have a hand crotched walnut bedroom set turn of last C. You look at the headboard and drawers on dressing table etc and you see both sides of the tree cut. Some of it is burled. I just fall in love with that kind of wood. I would post a photo but that is probably over the top. I think you get the drift.

How about some of those beautiful carved pine boxes of the 30s and 40s. Got a bunch of those too. I just can't resist them.

Oh you reminded me! I have a lucite piano music box my dad made for my mother when they were going together. The song was haunting and I never knew what it was...until the Movie Titanic. That was the song. Freaked me out.

The only thing I really collect are 1:18 scale die-cast model cars. 1:18 mostly, but I collect any scale, I've got a fair number of 1:24th scale, and a huge number of 1:64 scale (Hot Wheels size)

Knowing nothing about wood I can't picture what you just described at all. PLEASE post a picture. It sounds interesting.
Well, I'm going to pretend to know what you're talking about TM, but I want a picture, too. A big, pretty picture. Several big, pretty pictures. Pretty ones like Auessie posted. Lots. :D

I collect horse travel books, well used to until I got Fred on loan.

As for hobbies, well horse riding is my main one. I love archery but its been awhile since I last did it and my bow is tucked up in bed. I love walking and exploring and will take up sword fighting at some point in my life.

Are you sitting down?

I have the solid walnut, hand rubbed walnut bedroom suite I've had since I was about two . . . a couple of triple dressers with 3'x 5' mirrors, a couple of four drawer chests, and a doored bachelor chest with hutch. The beds I don't use, as one is twin and the other is full.

Ok I hope this helps. If you look at this piece, look at a pattern on drawers. Down the center of the drawers, there is a vertical line. This is the line that divides the two sides of the same tree cut. The piece is cut from the log and then split in half by hand. Then both sides of the same tree cut are used on the same drawer. This is best seen on the second drawer in this pic. "Hand crotched". On the top drawer you see a bit of "burl". That's a swirly or mottled kind of wood. Burled wood is among the most desired in old pieces. Some pieces are HEAVILY burled and quite beautiful. The dressing table to this set has its top drawer burled. You also notice strips that are on the second drawer. These are hand cut pieces that are hand hammered into the draw.

In these shots you see the carvings...first one is a corner of a drawer, second shot is top drawer striated and the carving along the edge of the chest top. This piece also has a built-in cedar chest at bottom drawer. The insides of the drawers are also finished and dovetailed.

And here's a closeup of what Burling looks like.

Dang! We'll have to meet up somewhere... I've always wanted to try archery (and then try it on horseback) and I could get you started in fencing (fun sport at any age! One of the women in the club started at age 65 with her grandson and she's still fencing at 76.)
There's a coach's joke about beginning fencing students:
Put a stick in the beginner's hand and have her face a wall, about 3 feet away. Stand behind her with a paper bag, blow it up and pop it when she least expects it. If the student jumps, shrieks and drops the stick - she's going to be a foil fencer; if the student jumps forward and hits the wall with the stick - she's going to be an epee fencer; if the student turns around and beats the cr*p out of you with the stick, she will be a sabre fencer. (I'm a sabre fencer and foil fencers always get annoyed at this joke. Lol!)

Aussie, your collection looks like you put a LOT of time into it.

Sis, is that second pic a mirror? The edging looks like something from the 30s?

I don't so much collect anything (except clutter it seems!)--but I do love to paint, draw, create...so my hobbies have and do include crafing of all sorts (crochet, knit, cross stitch, scrapbooking)--but my favorite at the moment is painting. I have painted murals in my kids rooms (currently re-doing my daughters room, and she wants all sorts of things painted on the walls! LOL-we'll see!)--but I love to revive ugly old furniture (not decent wood--crappy pieces people would toss out!)--or paint wooden boxes. I looooooove painting these. Will try to post some pics later---something so fun about taking a simple little pine box and making it something so different!
Anyway--that's it!!:D
