The ones I know are not nuts. They are active hunting types, but not as bad as some of the other spaniel types I know. (like irish red and whites, and brittanies)
Hers was just very understimulated. He lived a lonely life outside. Only interaction he ever got was getting fed/watered and when someone would go out to do yard work. Poor guy.

It's funny how some of these are considered "rare" I guess it depends on the area, maybe. So I'm just going to list the dogs I've only met one or so of ever.

Coton De Tulear
Spanish Water Dog (i totally didn't even know they existed til I met one)
Polish Hunting Hound (I think there are like 3 in the US, or so I'm told)
Dandie Dinmont Terrier
Black Russian Terrier

I've only ever met one Catahoula and that was in Key West. But they're very popular in the south I think?

Here there are a ton of Portugese Water Dogs, Shiba Inus, French Mastiffs, etc. I don't come across many big guardian breeds like Cane Corsos or Presas or anything.

Well, if you count dog shows, I've met at least one of every AKC breed.

Away from show grounds, quite a bit fewer of the rare breeds...

Spinone
Vallhund
PWD
Gordon Setter
Dogo
Corso
Havanese
Basenji
Clumber Spaniel
Boykin Spaniel
Patterdale Terrier

...and a few others that I don't remember or don't really consider rare.

I've run across several Irish Wolfhounds, but didn't really consider them a "rare breed."
Thats why I was wondering what consists of a rare breed. around here irishwolfhounds are rare.

Id even say borzois are normally rare. But I have met atleast 9 or 10 of them around here at all different places. along with swedish vallhunds.

Corso's are VERY popular around here aswell.

oop's for got a plotthound lives around the corner same as a shirperkee (sp?)

I haven't actually met that many breeds. I live in an area dominated by BCs, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Labs, Cattle dogs, and many mixed breeds, small and large.

Any breed that isn't one of the above would be considered pretty rare.

I have only ever met one whippet. Gorgeous!

I have only just met a Tibetan Terrier and Papillons are not very common at all.

Edit - It was a real eye opener for me when I went to a dog show a few weeks back for the first time. So many breed in the flesh, unfortunately I didn't get to meet all of them in the flesh. My breath was taken away by the Salukis and the Afghans... it was almost like I am a closet sighthound person... but really I think I was just amazed at their attitudes, elegance and beauty.

Xoloitzcuintli (at Petsmart)
Pharaoh hound (someone I know competes with them in agility)
Belgian Malinois (which, I would technically consider *rare* because I met him at Petsmart)
Tibetan Mastiff (at the dog park, the only one I've met outside a show)
Clumber Spaniel (two in the neighborhood)
Cane Corso (I have only met one, at our obedience class)

And of course, Ibizan hounds, Swedish Vallhunds, Beaucerons, etc. at dog shows.
