I dont think I have ever met a really rare breed before. At least I cant remember. Maybe if I think about it I will remember.

Bouviers are pretty uncommom where I live, but they are not rare.

Pharaoh Hounds are probably the most exotic breed I've met, at least that I can think of right now.

OH!

I met not one... not two... but THREE! Filas the other day... The couple has 3 filas and a dane and feeds premade raw... full house i'd say with a massive food bill.

pyr shepherds, boykin spaniel, grand gascon saintongeois, a newfXmaremma, carolina dog... all 7 coonhound breeds, a variety of curs & feists... i guess it depends what you consider rare? out of my neighbors growing up, one had Pulis, one had Porties, and one had a Bouv (hence my love of them)... when I was a kid none of those were very common ;)

Hmmmm...maybe not so much as "rare" as uncommon in this area, but I've met a "wolf hybrid", a Dogue de Bordeaux, a Havanese, two Belgian Malinos and....that's about it. LOL Oh, and a Basenji.

Its funny where I live no one knows what a Bouve is. I always have to describe them. Or I get "what breed is she?" I say Bouve and they get a confused look on their faces.

I see Mareemas nearly daily lol.

The most exotic was the Thai ridgbacks. But I also have met mexican hairless, cresties, cane corsos, dogge de bordeaux (sp?), russian terriers, (lol LHWs) saluki's, basenjis, cotton de tulier (sp), mudis, tollers (not really rare here but might seem rare to people not in ontario) kelpies, berger de picard, shiba inu, likely more but that is all I can think of.

My list (depending on what you consider rare): Dogue De Bordeaux, Black Russian Terrier, Spinone Italiano, Mudi, Xoloitzcuintli, Leonberger, Tibetan Mastiff, Coton de Tulear, Karelian Bear Dog, and of course Longhaired Whippets (if they count! LOL)

I'm sure I left some off... in my line of work I've met a LOT of dogs in the last 5 years.

Edit to add Tollers, Shiba Inu and Chinese Crested, since Kerri pointed out that they can be considered rare.

There's a Kangal here that I see a couple times a year. She's a therapy dog and brings her out a lot. Really cool girl!

Hmm . . . well, Filas, of course, and several wolf hybrids (unfortunately they aren't nearly as rare as they should be :( ), when I was a kid one of our neighbors had a Basenji, I met a Puli at a local car show, there are a couple of Cane Corsos and a Dogo I've met at weight pull, and a Hairless Terrier.

It really depends a lot on what you consider rare. I've met a lot of Basenji's and Shibas, Landseers/Newf's, a handful of Leonburgers, Havanese, Malenois, Terverens, Beaucerons (a former boss of mine breeds them) and I've met a Fila--Kharma.
