Renee, excellent post!

Bentor, you're a nice guy :D Your puppy is adorable too. You're totally right when you say that the impression you got of breeders is that they are only doing it for the money... I think it's probably the case of 80% of them. Knowing that, there are two things that we usually really dislike at Chaz 1) breeders that breed puppies without doing any health testing, so you end up with sick puppies (unfortunately it's often the case), 2) there are so many dogs in shelters that unless breeders breed to improve a breed, any breeder breeding for another reason is just adding to the surpopulation of dogs. Apart from that though, there are good breeders who only breed for health and temperament, do lots of testings, and make sure to only place the puppies in good homes, with spay/neuter contracts etc.

No matter how much some people always try to make it a mutt vs purebred debate, it's not. Our problem is irresponsible breeders. I know the word 'irresponsible' can be pretty insultant, but it really just means 'that doesn't think of the consequences', and most of the time I think that people like your sister just don't really realize that 5 million dogs (mutts and purebred) get killed in shelters every year.

If more people would stop breeding their dog because they know people who would like a puppy, and just asked those people to adopt a puppy from a shelter instead, it would be a first step to prevent so many unwanted dogs from dying. I know that some rescues are a bit pricey, but SPCA's and other shelters are usually cheap, less than $100, and it includes worming, vaccinations and often neutering. It's a real deal to get a dog there.

So anyway, I know we often get angry fast here, but we realize that lots of people just don't know better... all we can do is try to educate, it's just that we take it so much to heart that we're not always very diplomatic about the issue.

That being said, welcome to the forum, and I hope you will stay around.

Shelter dogs don't cost $300. Without proper screening of the sire and dam's genetic health undesirable traits can be passed passed on to the offspring, one's you didn't even know about because they can be recessive. That would cost the owners alot more than it would cost to just get a dog from a shelter or responsible breeder to begin with.

Oh my gosh. Uhg. This person made a thread about her dog, just asking an innocent question (if anyone had seen the mix beofore) and everyone just blasts her with rude remarks and questions. Dont blame the puppy or her for your disagreements on breeding. Plus, its not like the dogs went to the pound, at least this one has a home!
Anyways, your pup is adorable, and no, I havent seen the mixture before! I wonder what he'll will grow up to look like!

Whew !!! Grammy's gone for a few hours and the screen explodes !!! Bentor... 1st, I want to say how sorry I am for some of the previous postings. We are not against Mutts here, and I'm glad you took one of your sister's pups ( CUTE)....since you're new , you may not know that I bred Golden Retrievers for 40 years. Not for money, but to extend my line and by demand. I only bred every 2 to 3 years and always had a waiting list.Over my many years I may have ended up with $500. ( the price of my pups ) which was put into my dog health fund. Don't put good breeders down. They do it for their love of the breed . I'm now into rescue ...my present Golden , and when he's gone will either get another rescue Golden or find a " heart " Mutt somewhere. Thanks for putting up with the previous ventings here.! I admire you for sticking to your guns and walking through some of the posters who mean well , but a lot of times scare off great newbies.... I feel you are one and if you sister wants to breed again , she'll hear from you !! Until then, you gain from her error .... so enjoy !!!! And wecome to Chaz!!!

I love mutts. Don't like their breeders. I hate seeing good dogs being put to sleep or treated badly because of the pet population. I hate to see good dogs suffering because of poor living conditions.

I think your dog is super cute. I'm so glad he has a home where he is loved.

The end.

I am not really one for breeding mutts myself...BUT sometimes the shelters have such a tight screening process it would be hard for the pope to adopt a dog from a shelter. I mean some say no fence no dog, other animals and no dog, kids under 5 no dog, if you've rehomed an animal for ANY reason no dog. Sometimes it is impossible to adhere to their standards and getting a puppy from someone who had an accidental litter or whatever is your only option if you really want to add a dog on as a member of your family.

Hey Bentor! Your pup is adorable!
Sorry you encountered such a verbal thrashing upon posting. The people in here mean well.
It's funny how as soon as I saw your thread, I inwardly cringed knowing what was coming....

Oh, Bentor! I don't think anybody here is against mixed breeds. Your puppy is adorable.
As many have pointed out, the reputable breeders are not in it for the money. Reputable breeders are in it for the well being of the breed - not so family and friends can have a dog "just like fluffy" and not because they think their dog is cute (which it always is) and should have puppies.

I'd say most people here love dogs in general, whether they be purebred or mixed breed. A dog is a dog, and I love them all. :)

Well I'm glad to see that little tiff calm back down lol. I didn't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers. I didn't realize how you all felt about this whole issue.

But on a lighter side. Here's another pic :D
Camera phones are horrible.

Awww so cute, he is tiny. I am happy that you feel better about this site now:D and when I first posted, I was sure that you didn't know that breeding mutts is a big issue here. As you saw, people here are very nice and helpful. I like to be around, and I am sure that all of us are happy that you liked the web:)

whoa...when i saw this thread yesterday, there were NO replies...but i was on a different computer & too lazy to log on a comment on how adorable your puppy is!!

Just wanted to chip in my 2cents....

Until i came on this forum, i also thought breeders were in it for the money, and really didnt agree with buying purebreds, and supporting them.

But then i got my crazy mutt (ok, unless directly used in an offensive manner, i like the word 'muut'...that is one of Oakley's nicknames, lol), Oakley....and kinda realized WHY behavior traits are important to pass on, lol.

My family loves him to death, but we have spent waaaayyyy more on his training alone than we would have had to spent on a QUALITY dog from a QUALITY breeder.

He is much better now, in the future when i get another dog, i will definately be getting one from a shelter :)

yay for adorable mutts!!!!

Glad your sticking around Bentor! Our typed words do sometimes come accross harshly. We do all mean well and I'm glad your able to see through them. I also cringed when I read your first post. I said "Oh boy, here we go again" Your first post did come accross as if your sister and her friend were chatting one day and just said, out of the blue, "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we got our two dogs together!" without a thought in the world of the consequences. That feeling in general will get most of us here in a tither!

What's done is done and I'm sure you'll find us to be the best bunch of mutts to be around and to learn from.

Cheers! Salute! Peace! :)

PS: Scooter is adorable
