Renee, excellent post!
Bentor, you're a nice guy
Your puppy is adorable too. You're totally right when you say that the impression you got of breeders is that they are only doing it for the money... I think it's probably the case of 80% of them. Knowing that, there are two things that we usually really dislike at Chaz 1) breeders that breed puppies without doing any health testing, so you end up with sick puppies (unfortunately it's often the case), 2) there are so many dogs in shelters that unless breeders breed to improve a breed, any breeder breeding for another reason is just adding to the surpopulation of dogs. Apart from that though, there are good breeders who only breed for health and temperament, do lots of testings, and make sure to only place the puppies in good homes, with spay/neuter contracts etc.
No matter how much some people always try to make it a mutt vs purebred debate, it's not. Our problem is irresponsible breeders. I know the word 'irresponsible' can be pretty insultant, but it really just means 'that doesn't think of the consequences', and most of the time I think that people like your sister just don't really realize that 5 million dogs (mutts and purebred) get killed in shelters every year.
If more people would stop breeding their dog because they know people who would like a puppy, and just asked those people to adopt a puppy from a shelter instead, it would be a first step to prevent so many unwanted dogs from dying. I know that some rescues are a bit pricey, but SPCA's and other shelters are usually cheap, less than $100, and it includes worming, vaccinations and often neutering. It's a real deal to get a dog there.
So anyway, I know we often get angry fast here, but we realize that lots of people just don't know better... all we can do is try to educate, it's just that we take it so much to heart that we're not always very diplomatic about the issue.
That being said, welcome to the forum, and I hope you will stay around.
