Its in Dracos contract that he would go back to the breeder. As much as my family loves him, he would probably be too much for them without me.

Odear. I have not thought about this before. Then again, my dog is 7 years old already. I will probably live longer than my dog. I suppose. Keeping my fingers crossed.

It would either be a family member or friend, as to who, I do not know, at least now, but I know there will always be someone who would be happy to take them if anything happened. :)

Bukra, Zealand, and Peshamba would go back to their respective breeders.

Jolene has quite a few people who want her that I would trust to handle her.

Ruger would be euthanized... he wouldn't survive without me, the poor lil fella.

I'm surprised by the number of people that would want their dog euthanized. I was reading about vets that won't euthanize a dog because of its owner's passing. They consider it unethical.
Only if it's a healthy temperamentally sound dog that could be rehomed. That would be any of my dogs. Jonas I worry about, but I highly doubt I am the last person on earth he could bond with and live his version of a normal life with- except he does have a single bite on his history, but a bad bite nonetheless.

Now Elsa is a different story. My boyfriend is not equipped to work with her and unless there is a magical no dog home that wants a project dog, or a sanctuary willing to take her, she would be out of options. She's a really great dog that is adoptable and maybe will be OK with other dogs, but if I'm gone someone else equipped would have to step in. If there was no one else, it would be more humane to have her euthanized.

Dad would take Desoto, he is the only one I trust and who lives somewhere appropriate for him (the boonies) There would probably be a battle over who got Radar, either my mom or my sister would take him. Likely my sister as we already live together and he and her dog adore each other.

My boyfriend would definitely have Art. Art is as much his dog as he is mine, though he is more strongly bonded with me. If both David and I died.....well.....I *might* be able to trust my sister with him, but I'm not sure on that. I feel like he would regress to his old snot of a self with new people, but I think overall he would be fine. He likely just wouldn't get to go out to a lot of places unfortunately. Other than her my friend would definitely take him. She adores him so much, but again he would likely regress without the work I've done with him and wouldn't go very many places likely. Which again would be ok, he'd be happy as long as he had someone to cuddle with ;)

It makes me smile that so many of you would have people fighting over your dogs! I think that's the situation Rowan would be in if I was gone.

My mom loves him and she'd be willing and happy to
to provide all of the affection that he's used to (playing, petting, cuddling) but realistically she's probably too busy to provide the physical and mental stimulation he needs. I think she'd probably agree. She likes having a "grandma" role with him - play together, have quality time, then send him back home to me ;)

My dad would be a good candidate actually. I lived with him the first few years I had Rowan so he's used to the house. They (my dad and my little brother) LOVE Rowan and were both bummed when I moved out with him. He'd get plenty of exercise with them, and attention. I just worry that with my 8 year old brother around, a door or gate would get left open accidentally and he'd be gone. :/

I'd trust just about any of my coworkers with him, and I think those that aren't at their dog limit would be glad to take him. They're all dog savvy enough that I would trust that his standard of care would remain the same. I wish my supervisor would be able to take him, but she's got 5 dogs and her husband says no more, haha. She took him for a couple of nights and he loved her three Papillons, so we've been calling him the honorary giant Papillon. :)

If something happens to me... either my parents or my sister would take care of Cinnamon, they all love her so i'm sure she'd be well taken care of. :)

It's actually in my will that my dogs and horses are to be euthanized should I pass away.

I can hear the rumbles and the sharp intakes of breath now, but people, let's face reality. People aren't scrambling over one another to take in an American Pit Bull Terrier, much less one in the "senior" category. And the horse market is in the toilet, and all of the people I know, love, and trust are at their limit. There's no way in hell I'm going to allow someone to treat my horses (or dogs) below the level at which I treat them.

So it's actually in my living will that my animals are to be euthanized, and my friend, and vet, has agreed to be the acting vet. But I pray every day that I live to be old enough to rock my grandchildren. :)

I guess dumping them at the local animal control/animal shelter is ethical then? I'm sure vets wish more people would dump the animals of deceased love ones there.

I know many, many, many vets who would rather see an animal euthanized before putting it into a situation where the animal would fail or suffer negligent and/or inhumane treatment.

Fwiw, when a dog is euthanized, it doesn't lie there and think about how cruel the owner(s) was to do that to him....especially after it's dead.

ETA: And this is further "proof" of why I will firmly fight to for animals to remain as "property" and us their "owners", instead of straying towards the ARistas idea of "guardians".

Oh... I assumed it
Meant if we both died. If it were just me the dogs would stay with hubby and continue on with life as they know it
