Tres will be 7 months old at the end of this month. Every other male I have had, I neutered at 6 months. However, I have read numerous places that you should wait to neuter a large breed dog (he's a standard poodle) due to growth. I have noticed an increase in my other two neutered males humping Tres and he has now started to try to hump them. He's always lifted his leg to pee, but he hasn't started marking *fingers crossed*.

Is it better to curb the male behavior and neuter now, or to let him grow and neuter later?

I waited until Dante was 14 months old, would have gone to 24 but I was worried about a retained testicle.
Now since I've read even more I'd wait to 24 months even with a retained testicle.

This of course goes without saying that the intact dog stays in control and isn't the cause of an "ooops litter"

If you can wait do so! My boys are both still intact. If you are responsible about it it shouldn't prove to be a problem.

It is totally up to you...Though it is great to let them grow and mature in a multi dog household it is always best to neuter as soon as possible. I have one dog and he is intact. I would never have two intact males together because of fighting and in a multi dog household like you have even though the others are fixed it can still cause problems JMO :)

The humping is a dominance thing. Even females will do it. He's not humping them back because he's intact, he's doing it to try and be dominant over them, just like they are doing to him.

Personally I'd wait till he's full grown, but you'll need to be more aware of his habits and keep a little more on top of him training wise.

I agree with Dan humping doesnt have everything to do with being intact, its more of a dominence thing and somtimes even a play thing. (heck at the dog park today TWO females kept humping my dog, one becuase she was a pup and was just learning, she was using it more as play becuase blaze would turn around and rough house with her. while the other was obviously trying to dominate Blaze)

If you can properly handle a intact dog, wait as long as you like. It is not impossible to have a very well behaved intact male dog. Blaze is intact and at 4.5 years has never tried to mark anything inside any where (houses, vets, pet stores). Out side IS a difffernt story with him peeing on everything lol.
