I have only had two dogs that came pre-named. The first was a Pomeranian. Her breeders had named her Darby and I liked the name so I kept it. The second was a Samoyed mix that I adopted from the animal shelter. Her previous owners called her Trixie and I just couldn't call her that. I changed it to Teaga. It took her a while to get used to the name though and I felt a bit guilty about it at the time.

I have adopted out numerous older pups and adults of my breeding and no one has changed their names. Most people do change the puppy names I give the litters when they get it as a puppy though.

Uncle Fred was just Fred in the rescue--until my husband noticed the resemblance to his Uncle Fred.

And Mini had the worst name of all. She was Snoopy, presumably because all beagles, regardless of sex, should be called Snoopy. We couldn't call her Snoopy, and couldn't think of anything else, so my 9 yo, Will, was calling her mini-Fred when he was playing with her, just as a descriptor, and she promptly started answering to it, so we were stuck. We just respelled it Minifred, like Winifred with an M.

Argon was Fred. Pukey Pukey Pukey! I had hated that name five years ago when I knew him as a puppy, and I hated it when he came to be with me. He came very close to either being known as "Gambit" or "Sonic", but he was just too lazy for either one of those. But an inert gas? Perfection!

Bella & Elle were unnamed by their breeders... Elle's asked what her name would be and started calling her by that name... Bella we didnt name until we got her.

Armani came from a lady with a young (like 2) son and he called him Meatball... LOL... hence the name change.

great thread idea!

wicca didn't have a name- she was "fairy kiss girl" (she has a dot on the middle of her head called a fairy kiss in corgis)

Vito was jack in the rescue- which is not a bad name but I know LOTS of dogs and people named Jack- so it had to go. I don't know any other Vito's.)

Boone was Blair by his previous owners. I didn't like the name at all, and he needed a new name for a new life.

Pixel was Pixie at the breeders. Way too girlie for me!

My mom called our dog Pookie when he first showed up at our house. He just looked like a Pookie Bear lol with his big head and feet, he was a bit goofey looking back then. When we decided to keep him my dad said he wouldnt have a dog named Pookie and said he needed a tougher name so he named him Duke. My sister still calls him Pookie, this has been three years lol.

Bernie....came to us as Basil:eek: at the tender age of 7 weeks.. we changed it on the car ride home.. to Bernie Mac.. no, not for the comic, but for Uncle Bernard who helped fund hubby's move to Canada, and Mac for the apple tree he's meant to guard from the fuzzy tree rats. Sounded good at the time, and he truly is a Bernie! Only problem is.. we fenced half the yard for the dog run, and the apple tree is on the outside of the fence!:lol-sign:

For the record...this is as stinkeye as Bernie gets.. normally he's just a dude of a dog lol

Apparently he's guarding the bone instead of a darn tree!
