What sort of testing should different breeds have done?

Are MDR1 carrier-status Collies still used in breeding? Do you know if the MDR1 gene is more common in American Collies versus British Collies? Hope you don't mind the questions, just curious about other MDR1 breeds....
Personally, I wouldn't breed a mutant/mutant, but I know those that do. It really depends upon the other qualities the dog/bitch has to offer. But then you would want to breed to a normal/normal so that the offspring are one step better (they would all be normal/mutant). One thing to keep in mind, that with 3/4 of the Collie population being affected in some way, to not breed any carriers would severely limit the genepool. We could erradicate MRD1 but perpetuate temperament problems, eye disorders and weak hips.

I don't know about the percentage of US vs UK Collies, though - I'm not sure where they got their DNA to do the testing.

good breed websites should have lists of what testing should be done for each breed - ie, go to the breed club website and it should have a section on health.

for dobermans- hips, heart (NOT auscultation, but an echocardiogram and a holter), thyroid, vWD, eyes, and occassionally elbows.

Basically there was no testings in Goldens when I started breeding ... as they came up I did OFA/CERF/heart .....elbows came in about when I quit breeding. I'll check with my daughter as to what the breeder of her new pup ( next Saturday ! ) does and the Sire's owner . Both have show champions , so I'm sure they do the gamut .

Jrt's CERF, BAER, is the most common, I also do OVC (same as OFA) for hips, also check Patella's and Thyroid. Oh h*ll, for the life of me I can't remember the name of the bleeding disorder that I test for also.......Von W?? Sorry, too tired to go to my files and look or do a online search. But it is important for us because we hunt with our dogs and they sometimes get bites from quarry etc. CERF, jrts are prone to Cataracts, PRA, PLL
Take care

lol Yes that is it, thanks. I could have gone to my filing cabinet and looked at my health records, but it was late and honestly I didn't feel like it!!!! Plus I have been having a great time reading all threads on this forum, very glad that I found Chaz, excellent and one of the best, if not the best that I have come across online.
Thanks and take care
Lynn
