chihuahuas are prone to hypoglycemia, particularly when unnusually small (est adult weight under 3.5lbs) and all chis under 8 months...
because of this feed a high quality food and feed frequently.
i/my parents Free feed mine and have never had an issue with over eating, my smallest is 3lbs and he needs to eat frequently, he does have hypoglycemic episodes if he doesnt eat...
but an adult chihuahua of standard size (4-6lbs should eat about 3 times aday...smaller chis or chis prone to hypoglycemia, up it to 4-5 times a day...
larger chis can go twice a day without a problem (7lbs up)

feed a premium food, chis tend to be sensitive to corn so avoid it...
chicken soup for the puppy/dog lovers soul, merrick, kirkland, evo, and nutro are all brands myself and frineds with chis have had luck feeding, royal canin was another favorite but its expensive and not that great quality.

no eukanuba, science diet, or grocery store brands, chis need a food with no junk in it, a good protein level so that the energy burns consistently through the day, instead of in bursts (like a kid on a sugar rush)
