I'm sure this has been discussed to death and there may not be a concrete answer but I have to ask.

I have adopted a 4 year old toy poodle and I want to use some type of flea preventative (I think). I'm not sure what to do or what to use I have only had this lovable dog for two months.

It depends. If you live in an area with lots of grass and ticks. In North Carolina I had to use Frontline. Here we have a small yard and I just spray lemon water on them every now and then. I really dont like using product that say wash your hands immediatley. What is this doing to your dogs skin?

I like frontline plus. It is waterproof. And works well in my neck of the woods.

I also liked advantage, but it is only water resistant. And with my dogs swimming all the time it just didn't work as well.

I also find that I only use frontline about every 8 weeks not every month and I have not even seen a flea since I started using it. I only use it from Apr thru Sept. or Oct. So if ticks are not infesting your dog maybe you could get away with using it less than directed.

Both killed the fleas, but with all our water activity, frontline plus is the way to go for me.

Thats really good to know! Thanks Julie!!
Riot is on Advantage, but with his recent water activity that make me thinking! :)

Grammy - I recently saw a commercial for k9 Advantix and it looks like a good product.. is that waterproof as well?

Summer... I think after it's absorbed into the skin, it is.

Bear takes a Program pill once a month... it works, but I'm begining to think they're not too good for her.

Diatomaceous Earth has been mentioned a few times, but I'm not too familiar with it. It's very safe though, from what I've heard. Perhaps someone else will be able to provide more information:)

Oh yeah...forgot about frontline plus..lol. I use that in the summer when they get baths more often. It's good for fleas for up to 3 months, but good against ticks only monthly. I use it every 3 because my dogs don't go into bushes and tall grass a lot, I haven't had a problem with ticks yet.

You could use a Sentinel and Frontline or Advantix combo. Sentinel is a Hw, intestinal, and flea birth control. Yes, birth control. There is a chemical called fipronil in it that prevents the flea's egg tooth from developing so that they cannot hatch from their egg. The Frontline is pretty good about killing fleas and ticks on the spot. Some people don't like it... Advantix is for ticks.

so from reading this thread it seems as if the advantix is better for ticks? I need to get Zoe a med cuz I just found a tick on her! I used Hartz last year during the warmer months, is that not a good brand?

Thank you very much for the links! I am looking at them. I will be sure to tell my mom also and get her something else to use.

I still have the question though if the advantix works better for ticks than the frontline? Or would it matter which one I try? Also do I need to get these from my vet?

I don't know if advantix works better for ticks or not. I have never used it. I don't like using permethrin on my dogs. Maybe I am overreacting but this seems to cause more adverse reactions than the newer type ingredients.

And if you have any cats that live near your dogs you should not use advantix. The permethrin ingredient is very dangerous for cats and they should not be near dogs that use advantix.

For me frontline plus works well on ticks, but then again they are only a problem for a couple months. I have never seen an attached tick using frontline. I have gotten a few strays off during peak season, but nothing to get worked up about. And we are a family that hardly ever chooses the "beaten path" lol

I am just thankful they have new products that are less dangerous and more effective than they did years ago.........during the old sheep dip.

I buy my flea meds on-line, depending on price and shipping. Much cheaper than buying from the middleman vet.:D
I will post the addresses, but I have to find them first.:)
