I'm thinking once my website is done, and a bit closer to summer, I'll post on kijiji. That way anyone I get has lots of time to get to know me and be screened. I can let them know what shows I'll be at and they can come meet me then, or not, but at least it'll put it out there that there are clearances etc. that need to be done on the dogs.

I bought both Sloan and Backup after finding them on a working dog forum classifieds.
A world away from bog standard puppy pushing website classifieds though....

I don't think it's about setting up ads on crap sites, it's more about setting up good sites like champdogs. It's easily found using google to search for dog breeders.

I just tried it out by typing in "dog breeders" in google and Champdogs didn't show up for me. Maybe it's because I'm in the US? I don't know if Google is smart like that or not.

I agree w/majority about breeders posting their ads on puppy finding sites. About the question 'what kind of owner is looking there, anyway?'; Maybe a bad one, or maybe one that is new to getting dogs and does not know where to start their search. Not everyone comes equipped knowing how to find a good breeder/knows there are places online you can ask.

One of the breeders I'm in contact with advertises not puppies, but her kennel and the fact that she breeds, on puppyfind. She does this for aforementioned reasons, to try to get the people that don't know much about buying dogs. Champdogs(?) sounds like a good idea, but to the best of my knowledge there's no such thing in the US.

It is country specific. My ipad can't find my location at home and google always comes up with US links, which is really annoying!!

Eta it's the 2nd hit for me.

The third is the kennel club and they only show their accredited breeders, which have to stand by a particular code of ethics and expectations.

For my google the top 3 results for "dog breeders" (not including the paid for ad at the top) are

Breeders.net (which is where my kennel is listed)
Puppyfind.com
Dogbreedinfo.com

search "(your breed) puppies (your location)" and see what you get. Or better yet, pick a breed and breeder you KNOW is amazballs, and try to find them. IE, Matrix APBT in TX, search "pit bull puppies texas" and see if they come up or if you get a bunch of rubbish

this is the issue breeders need to solve, because this is literally how the uninformed go about finding their next puppy. they can either A- find a crappy byb puppy and go buy it and be told "good luck" or B- hit upon a good breeder who will educate the pants off them and maybe sell them a fantastic dog

which option is better for breeders, buyers, dogs, puppies, and the entire Dog Fancy?

I have found some of my best pet homes through classified sites like Puppyfind and nextdaypets. Owners who went above and beyond, had thoroughly researched the breed, all but one had experience with the breed and/or previously owned them, they had signed their puppy up for puppy class before they even took them home, had a good solid plan for exercise and daily life and were very open to advice/suggestions on care and training. Just really awesome pet homes, so glad they found me and made one of my puppies part of their family. One home I found through one of those sites had owned Belgians longer than I had and from some pretty well known, old breeders.

Do I get weirdos emailing me from online advertising? Occasionally. But I've gotten some weirdos through word of mouth too ;)

It isn't always realistic that people will "have the whole litter sold before they are born". Things happen. You have people interested who decide it isn't the right time for a puppy. Or you don't have the right puppy for them. Or you have a couple puppies who don't happen to match what people interested in want. Advertising is a great way to find pet homes for pet puppies, providing you are screening the potential homes as you would any other. If you are a person looking for a puppy, it's nice for breeders to advertise so you know who has puppies. Finding a breeder through advertising is great, providing you are screening the potential breeders as you would any other. I really fail to see the big deal about advertising. A lot of really good breeders advertise for all the reasons discussed here. Advertising is not a sign of quality or lack of quality. It's just...advertising. There's actual meaningful things you can use to get a feel for if a breeder is producing quality dogs or not (or dogs which would be a good match for you). There is really no need to use broad generalizations about something as insignificant as when, if and where they post their available puppies or upcoming litters.
