I didn't see on the page if they health tested or not..

Their GSDs do look better then the ones around here.. they dont have quite the drastic hip angulation.

I think they're OK. The only health test that they mention specifically is OFA hips. They seem to have that everywhere, but no mention of other testing.

If you look at this page, it explains the problem with GSD backs. Peakes Brook seems to be breeding for the American show ring. All of the dogs on their site that are Darby-Dan's have a very elongated back. http://www.shawlein.com/The_Standard/12_Type_Comparison/Comparison_Types.html (Look at Type C, specifically)

CM, I see some drastic differences in type, especially with reference to structure. It seems as though, in my eyes, they are trying to bridge the structural gap between the working lines and the show lines.

I don't like the fact that they say they have 1-2 litters a year...to me a reputable breeder may not have any litters one year. But that's just my opinion from the experience with my over-protected breed.

The dogs look healthy, they have nice eyes, alert expression and it seems that they do well in the show ring as well.

I'd give them a B+ as far as a grade goes. Possibly an A-.

I agree with you 100%. The dogs that didn't come from Darby's Dan look to be from working lines, but the other dogs have terrible structure. I also don't like that they aren't more forthcoming about additional health testing.

"All of our breeding dogs are OFA certified and we guarantee our pups for hip and health IN WRITING."

By that statement, do they only guarantee hips?

I know I'm probably a dork for saying this, but if GSD's rear ends slant a little more, their butts will be draggin'. I liked the old kind. But like I said, I don't know squat and I imagine there is a purpose for changing this breed over the past decades.

From what I understand it is mostly for appearances. And if you notice, the show lines have a considerable slope to their topline, the working lines have much less of a slope.

The German lines tend to have less of a slope, because they are typically bred more for working lines. The AKC has soooooo screwed up the German Shepherd by promoting the severe angulation. It's pretty sick really. Take a look at one of the original GSDs - no sloping at all really

Wow, what a difference! That dog looks like the majority of the "shepherd mixes" i've seen. Stout, strong body, solid skeletal structure, ears upright but not necessarily held erect, and a great big chest. Great looking dog.

I really like the older style. The way they are breeding them for the showring now makes them look like they are all running around with tail between their legs and hunched.

Yes, true. The theory being that it makes the dog's back stronger, even if it decreases their running speed. I don't like that either.

The GSD is in a lot of trouble these days. It's sad.
Yup, I look back to the ones that I had as a kid. Nice even topline, perhaps a bit more roached than flat. I look at the majority of the show lines and it really makes me angry.

i believe the slope in their back was bred for what is called "the flying gait". It seemed to be the idea that they more sloped their hind end was, the easier they had to do their flying gait. It causes their read end to have only lateral movement. This is what I have been told.
As far as walking correctly - it DOES inhibit that! lol The look like they would topple over if they weren't running with it.

If your looking for a nice GSD go for the Cvech lines. They have awesome looking GSDs!

I know, Ed. I had a GSDx as a kid and I LOVED that dog. He was so awesome. He was strong, protective, wonderful around me as a kid.... He had HD, though.

I would really want to have another GSD, but I look at the breed now with so many divides and types and problems that I doubt I ever will have another.
