In two weeks I'm going to college in Maine. We're leaving on September 3rd and staying in a hotel until the sixth (I'm getting dropped at school on the 5th). We really want to being the dog because the only person staying at home is my brother Danny and he isn't very fond of caring for animals. He doesn't dislike them, just doesn't want anything to do with caring for them and doesn't get any particular joy from them. I can't see him taking the dog out every hour or playing with the dog, he'll just get upset when the dog tries to bite and pull his clothes and not bother to do anything to expend his energy. So we want to bring him if we can.

We are concerned about when we have to leave him in the crate in the hotel. At night he's perfect, not a peep. However if he's left alone and we leave he cries, we can just hear him outside of the house. I have no idea how long he goes for but he is content when we get home. I assume if he does this for very long at the hotel we'll get in trouble. We are going to try and bring him with us as much as possible but we'll need to go out to dinner and can't bring him when we are moving me into my dorm. Do you think this will be a really big problem? Do you think there is any chance he won't be doing this in two weeks? HOw long did your dog cry for? Do you think we should just leave him with Danny and hope for the best?

Auggie will bark if left alone in a hotel... unless I turn on the TV. Then he is quiet. Can you try this with your little guy and see if that works when you leave the house?

I had a foster who cried and cried for 2-3 hours when left alone in a crate. This was overnight though--I don't know what he did during the day.

I'm sure your brother would put the dog outside for potty as well as feed him. If no one else is home, he may even play with the dog. If the puppy bugs him, he can put him in a crate. Another option is to board him. My favorite option would be to leave him with a trusted friend who would feel wonderful that you chose him/her to babysit.

When do you leave? I'd start to pretend to leave the house, act like you're getting ready to leave, go outside the door, come back inside and c/t puppy for being quiet in crate. Gradually increase time you are gone for.

What college in Maine?

Thanks for the tips everyone. Next time we leave we'll try a TV or radio. I also think we should try finding a kong stuffing he likes, he showed zero interest in Peanut butter.
I know if we leave him with Danny the dog will be fine...he just might experience a significant backwards slide in housebreaking and Danny might loose his mind.

Merico, I'm going to the University of New England in Biddeford.

A lot of hotels and motels have policies that you cannot leave your dog in the room crated even, if you aren't going to be there with it.

When Kerri and I go to trials together we make all our plans including dinners, shopping and anything else we need to include at least carting the dogs in the car where we are going.

More and more places to stay are becoming less and less dog friendly. If your little guy does bark and you leave it behind in a hotel you may find you don't have a place to stay when you come back.

i would opt for boarding him either at home or in the town that you are in. there are usually some great doggie daycares in some of the larger towns that may be able to babysit or recommend something.

best!

I wouldn't trust leaving a dog in a hotel; what if the dog was gone when you got back?

If the weather is cool up there, why don't you just take the pup with you and leave the pup in the car. Another idea is if there is a doggie daycare nearby.

I think leaving him in the car is feasible...but do you think we'd get in trouble? I mean, like if we leave him in the crate on the car when we eat dinner and someone hears him barking can we get fined for that? I don't know the laws regarding leaving dogs in cars when it's NOT hot.
Do most places where you eat outside allow the dogs to be with you? I know around here I've seen dogs outside at Panera, there is no place that says they are "allowed" to be there but no one cares that they are.

As far as boarding or daycare goes, Tucker is 11 weeks and does not have his rabies or all of his Parvo and I think distemper shots. So I doubt he is able to be kept in such places, even if a place does allow unvaccinated dogs then I'd be afraid he'd catch something.

Hey, I'm sure we'll figure something out, I'd just feel bad leaving Danny with the dog since he "didn't sign up for this" as he said last night. Plus this puppy is a terror, if he's not sleeping he's trying to bite you or eat some aspect of the house (well he's laid off with biting me, mom, and dad but since my brothers interact with him so rarely he hasn't learned he can't bite them either, I left him with my other brother last night while I walked Phoebe for my uncle (15-20 minutes) and he bit him in the arm, leg, and nipple hard enough to make him bleed). I didn't think about that the hotel might not allow us to leave him alone in the room...I really can't find much regarding pets on their website other than that they allow them. I do know for Orientation my parents stayed at the hotel and they said there were TONS of dogs there, no barking though.
