It's been quite a day. Both Shippo AND Eevee got attacked today (although in Shippo's case, he asked for it).

The first fight happened at a friend's house during a game of fetch. I was throwing the ball for Shippo, Eevee, and a friend's dog, Lilly. They are all normally great together during fetch, and there have never been any fights before. Shippo and Lilly were running after the ball, and Lilly bumped Shippo, who in his excitement, turned around and nipped Lilly in the face. After that, it was on.

Lilly laid into Shippo, who FOUGHT BACK for the first time in his life! The fight only lasted about 2-3 seconds, and Lilly had Shippo on his back, ending the fight before we could reach them. The ball was put up and both dogs were put in a sort of "time out" while everyone calmed down. No big deal. I THOUGHT the excitement was over for the day...

When I got home, I was walking across my front yard with both my dogs to head inside, when one of the neighbor's dogs (who was being supervised by a child and nobody else) jumped the puny little fence she has in her front yard, and headed straight for Eevee. The kid yelled out "Oh s***! Get your dogs!" This, to me, meant something was up, and I quickly grabbed the boxer's choke chain it was wearing, as it began to mount Eevee in a fighting posture.

She turned around and snapped at him (I would too!) and had I not been holding onto this dog, he would've attacked her. So I was standing there with a snarling, snapping boxer in one hand, and a very insulted, growly Eevee in the other (with Shippo close behind trying to defend Eevee), as the kid's mother ran out screaming to get the dogs in.

I dropped both leashes and told told Eevee "GO" in a firm voice while pointing toward the front porch, and she slunk quickly away to the porch. Shippo hovered around for a minute until I told him to "GIT" and he skittered away and watched from a distance, as I took the boxer back to his owner, who apologized profusely and asked if my dogs were okay.

FINALLY, I got my dogs in the house to feed them. That was quite a trip. I wish people would learn how to properly contain their dogs, especially if they know the dog doesn't do well with others. I'm exhausted now...

Wow, busy day!

Keep in mind that fighting is actually very reinforcing to dogs. Great adrenaline rush. So be EXTRA careful with your dogs together, as well as with other dogs in public, for the next week or two to make sure that there isn't another fight, as they will get progressively worse the more the dogs get to practice!

Ugh.........I am exhausted reading that! I must be getting too old to handle much excitement all at once, but I know I would have needed a LONG nap after those events!

Glad everyone is ok and nothing too terrible came of it.

Well, everything is still fine. I went to work afterwards, and my dogs interacted just fine. Shippo is still a young dog who has a lot to learn, and Eevee only fought back because she was protecting herself. It was rewarding for either of them, and I didn't make a big deal about it afterwards.

I will admit that I went to bed early last night!

I'm assuming you meant "wasn't."

Fighting is rewarding to dogs on a deeply internal, brain-chemical level. It's not rewarding like Click/Treat rewarding, unfortunately, it's much deeper than that. I'm mostly also saying this for all the lurkers or anyone else who will have a fight in the future. It sounds like you have a good handle on your situation and everything will turn out well.

Yes I meant "wasn't." I was in a hurry before work and wasn't paying attention lol.

Either way, neither of them is more or less aggressive than they were before these fights, so everything's fine.

Yeah, so am I. Didn't have much of a choice either way though. I know, people told me all this stuff I SHOULD have done, but none of it was even remotely possible. "Throw treats at the aggressive dog!" "Tell him to (insert obedience command here)!" "Body block him!" "You really should have grabbed your dog's legs to pull them apart and have a SECOND person grab the other dog's legs." Blah blah blah.

My hands were full of dogs and crap from work. I was BY MYSELF. The dog didn't know any commands. I didn't conveniently have a bag of treats to throw at the dog, and I wasn't given ANY time to black the dog with my body. I simply LOOKED DOWN and the dog was over that fence and on top of Eevee. It happened THAT FAST. I wasn't expecting to get attacked in my own yard while I was trying to get to my door. I haven't lived here that long, so I didn't know that the neighbor was THAT irresponsible.

Sometimes you just have to do what is humanly possible at the time, and that's what I did.

It's very easy for people to sit back and tell you their advice about what you should have done, but the fact is, in the moment, you are not thinking about what you SHOULD be doing, but what you CAN do, and that's ok. Accidents happen.... Just be relieved it all worked out ok in the end.

I exercise groups of dogs together every day, and usually we don't know a whole lot about the dogs' background or how they are with other dogs.... and other times accidents just happen. So I've been in the middle of a few fights. (Although it's been almost a year since I've had a fight in my exercise groups! Yay!) Now we have dog fight drills - if a fight happened NOW, what would I do - and I think that helps us a lot in the heat of the moment to do the right thing. Of course that's not going to help you, Cheetah, but again, I know a lot of people reading this live around dogs where the potential to fight is much more common.

I work at a doggy daycare, so we have a whole thing worked out for breaking up fights. We've got squirt bottles, hoses, air horns, mace, and there's always another person around in case a fight happens. Also, all the dogs there are evaluated before they are allowed in.

Sucks, because with all that great training, equipment, and manpower at work, it didn't help me at all in my front yard, where I had nothing. >-.-;<

Ah well. It all worked out in the end...
