when is a good time of day to start working on the basic training with the puppy? when i get up in the morning he is all kinds of wound up and just wants to play with his toys and wont listen to me talking to him.

Well, in the morning, you could get his zoomies out a little bit, some romping in the yard first always help. But really.....rather than actual segments of time set aside, what is very effective is periodically, throughout the day, showing him things; sit, encouraging him to come to you, to look at you....reward him for those things. It doesn't have to be one specific session. Pups have such short attention spans. But if you want to have a set aside time, that's ok too...just make it very short, like 5 minutes at a time if your pup is very young. How old is your pup anyhow?
