Yeah, where have the honey bees gotten to? I noticed last year too that there just weren't that many of them around.

It's simple the African killer bees have taken them. That is all we have here now so if you find a beehive you are strongly advised to leave it quietly and call for help. Basically all bees are killed here now.

I agree with what some of the previous posters said: there is no harm in trying to help the environment. Is there an article or website that counters the information in "An Inconvenient Truth"?

Well as far as global warming goes, real or not is an interesting debate.
Here's some things we know we are doing for real...
smog in cities.
Every summer in big cities weather services issue smog advisories because of all the crap coming out of cars and industry. The smog advisory is given as the chemical makeup of the smog is detrimental to human health causing all sorts of respiratory problems and environmental (as in your living environment) concerns.
So global warming, real or not is just one of many reasons to clean up our act. The fact is that the way we live right now is detrimental to our own health...
We may all get blown to pieces by some bomb sometime, but I'd prefer to be able to go through the apparently even shorter time that I have, without having to carry around a bunch of inhailers gasping for air every time I walk up a flight of stairs... and I'd like the same luxury to be given to my kids (If I end up with any :p)

What I don't understand is why are so many people terrified of what the future may bring. The average person feels like they are bringing about the end of the world if they don't recycle, yet they will breed like rabbit's which compounds a problem that's already been stated by Aussie Red.

The earth WILL take care of itself and it is already doing what it needs to, to bring down the population that is swarming over it's surface. All the wailing about the lives lost to natural disasters yet not one person says, maybe there were to many people there to begin with and the earth is just shaking off it's fleas? I'm a supporter of mother earth, not the human race. What she needs to do to survive is fine by me no matter how many must suffer for the corrections she makes. Why are we so important anyways? We didn't create the earth, she created us.

The government run and big business industry is a major contributor to the earths problems but you don't see the casino's converting to solar power to run their money making businesses. The brightly lit signs still shine every night to the bells and whistles inside. The industrial company's still use machinery to make things humans used to make, continuing to spew forth toxins into the air we breath. Don't even mention the auto industry that supports the oil industry both of which do more damage than you or I do. Does anyone even think of the damage that is caused by all the fuels that are sent into our atmosphere from space flights and satellite projects or the airplanes that send exhaust toxins into the air we breath?

It is the people with money and power who do more damage than the average Joe. Yet the government seems to want us to carry the weight of the global warming epidemic on our shoulders.

Start at the top and then work your way down. Don't lay it all on us. I'll do the best I can to not damage what I appreciate, and hope that those who have 2 people living in a house with 8 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and 5 cars actually start thinking beyond their narrow minded needs. Money may be necessary to survive, but it IS the root of all evil and those with more than the average person certainly don't seem to appreciate conservation like John Q. Public does.

Likewise, I don't understand why people shrug their shoulders and say 'gee, the problem's too big, so why bother?'

Fortunately or unfortunately, the earth isn't doing what it needs to to bring the population down....otherwise there wouldn't be over 5 billion (or is it 6 now) people. Guess what? we're here to stay and should seriouly do something to reduce our impact - global warming aside, it just makes more sense.

And who make the casinos or the auto industry or even the oil/gas industry profitable? Us, the almighty consumer. Point fingers all you want, it's still us screwing things up and we make it profitable, ta-boot. The real problem is too many people like to point fingers and say it's the oil industry or the auto industry and lack the accountability to admit they're part of the problem when they drive somewhere they could have walked to or jack the AC because 24 degrees is just too warm to sleep comfortably.

This is like blaming cigarette makers for all the ills that smokers suffer from. Why is it that a smoker isn't held accountable for his/her ailments? Likewise, why is it that the lower/middle-class masses who consume the most feel like they shouldn't contribute to the solution as well.

It is the people with money and power who do more damage than the average Joe. Yet the government seems to want us to carry the weight of the global warming epidemic on our shoulders.
And for every one of them there's 1000 or more lower/middle-class people who might not consume as much indivually, but on whole consume infinately more.

Start at the top and then work your way down. Don't lay it all on us. I'll do the best I can to not damage what I appreciate, and hope that those who have 2 people living in a house with 8 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and 5 cars actually start thinking beyond their narrow minded needs. Hate to break it to you, but there's a lot more John Q. Public's out there driving to work and home again than there are rich folk. There's a lot more middle-class people pi$$ing away their cash at the brightly lit casino than there are millionaires and there's a lot more land and light used by the JQP's than by the upper echelons of our society, including business. And there's a lot more JQP's with their heads up their a$$es than their are rich folk because there's a lot more JQP's out there buying into the industries they like to critisize.

This, of course brings me to the point where I then say, in order to bring about a bigger change, who do you go after? The few rich folks & industry itself or the sheep who blindly support it?

'Sheep' was perhaps a little harsh. However, like I mentioned before, we like to bash the auto and oil industries but we still buy into them. We like to point fingers at how wasteful the top 1% of North America is but the other 99% is still generating a lot more waste and taking up a lot more space on whole.

As for changing it, do what you can - simple as that. I don't drive and I've got a programable thermostat which keeps the house at a balmy 16 degrees while I'm at work (and Jake doesn't mind, seeing as how he sleeps under the covers during the day). I make sure the lights are off before I leave and I use the computer & TV a lot less these days while I'm at home. The next step for me is to replace my lawn mower.

i don't think sheep was too harsh. I stand in a qtrip and just watch with the twilight zone playing in my head and wonder if everyone were to cease the race and think i think that is impossible. THere are too many of us dependant on the way things are. BUt denying it's existance doens't help either, i wish i could. ..all i know is this is like watching a train wreck. WE can't stop our lifestyles..we cna't stop earning an income, and that relys on gas..and food is set up the way it is, we cannot grow enough on our one acre or there abouts to sustain even a meager exisitance. So i look for hope, what is out there that would make a difference or is that even obtainable? I just wish the issues were pushed out on the table and faced for what they are instead of the denial, or the fingerpointed blame. That is just background noise for the real issues. ARe we in trouble? I think we are. I want my girl Hy to have a chance. I had mine and if my life ended right now that would be ok, but she hasn't even had the chance to grow up and i so wish there were some people talking straight about where the difficulties lie and if there are any real way to have some impact on the outcome. IF the answer is no, then ok, i would plan the rest of my life accordingly, it is the just hanging there and watching that makes me so sad deep inside. In 50 years the world population according to whatever it is i just read will reach 9 million..and the statistics they put up is that our planet can only truly support 2 million without damage.

I think your figures are a bit off. There are over 9 million in the Los Angeles area alone. Again as I state it is because we keep making more of ourselves that is the problem. The planet can not handle the growth.

AndrewF, I am not your average John Q. Public town/city dweller. I don't support industry or business if I can do it any other way.

Air conditioning? Thermostats? Not in my house. I get my heat from dead fall and A/C is a luxury I don't need. I had 2 children and closed the factory. I purchased 50 acres with a handyman special home that is being renovated as much with recycled materials as possible while I live in it. My chicken coop is made from 100% recycled materials and my laying hens provide me with all the eggs I need. My garden combined with my preserving keeps me in vegetables ( I'm working on plans for a cold cellar as well ) and I make jam from the wild fruit trees in the area. Have you ever had Choke Cherry jam? It's awesome. :D I have meat birds and will be purchasing a mating pair of cows this year as well as a mating pair of pigs for other meat sources. Within the next few years my home will be run totally on solar and wind power. My water comes from a natural spring source and during the winter all my meals and water heating needs are provided by my wood stove. The only luxury's I have right now is a water pump and a hot water heater so I can shower, and my computer to keep up on world affairs and stay in contact with friends and family with (It's cheaper than long distance fees:) ). Coming to boards such as these is a bonus as it is a social outlet for me. My husband car pools to work and we only drive to town once a week.

What else is there that would make me less dependent on society and kinder to the earth? Give me time and I will find it and you can be darn sure it will be incorporated into my life. ;)

Oh yea, my dogs are being slowly switched to a totally raw and natural diet. I will be raising meat birds and rabbits for them too. My husband will be going hunting for their and our needs as well.

Your preaching to the choir here. Not many people would give up their creature comforts to try living the old ways. The closest town has a population of 2500. I love my life here and will live out my days here. The less I need to provide from the outside the better. My goal is to be as self sufficient as possible.

I've always hated the city life and the smell that goes with it. The only thing I can see that will stop me from being totally self sufficient is clothing. Though I'm sure my hubby wouldn't mind if I ran around naked all day either LOL ;)

Maybe you can explain to me why it is necessary for anyone to own or build a home that is 5 times or more the size required to keep a family? What is the purpose in owning more vehicles than necessary? The waste is abominable. It's for status yes? All the trees that were killed to provide that one home? All the wiring, plumbing products? These things do not make any sense to me. Being rich is one thing, being wasteful is another.....
