Unfortunatley I can't be too laid back with Art as far as his training goes. We work every day (either walks around people, or going to the store, or dog park, or wahtever) with Art to keep up on his non-reactivity to people. If we didn't I feel like he would just regress to being overly reactive with everything.

Food, eh, I don't even feed him every day. O_O lol His toy has enough food for two days, and he brings it to me when it's empty. Which he brings it to me every second day, unless we have been particularly active.

I'm too laid back for this forum's standards, probably.

My dogs don't care.

I don't always feed them every day. They haven't gotten new toys in months. If I don't feel like spending hours catering to dogs and they're behaving poorly, I pop them in crates or kick them out into the courtyard and enjoy some "me" time.

There are some times when I'm flat broke and all 3 of us live off of tortillas, rice, beans and cheap veggies. They love this.

I don't groom them very much. I haven't touched a brush to either one of them in a month. I trim Eve's feet because I'm anal about fuzzyfeets. I cut their nails when they get long. I used to spend hours every week dremeling dog nails so they'd be as short and smooth as possible. I just don't care anymore and neither do the dogs.

I don't spend a bunch of money every month on flea preventatives. If my dog gets fleas I dip them and wash their bedding, ta-da no more fleas. I don't do dietary supplements (though I would if I had more money to drop) or titers or any vaccines other than rabies (because it's required by law). I don't take them to training classes or doggy meet-ups or daycare. I don't buy them dog beds just so they can shred them.

They kind of live like scruffy little heathens, just like I do.

I would characterize my dog ownership skills as "lazy."

He's barely trained, but behaved decently well, and since I got a job and got busy we don't do much of anything anymore. I started practically living with my boyfriend last fall and the poor dog was just ignored for a few months because of it. I saw him 1-2x a week.

Flame away. ;)
I second this.

I'm a lazy dog owner. They are good dogs but they aren't trained per say lol. They go out and play in the back yard... belle lays out there most of the day. then they come inside and sleep on the couch and get loved up until they are ready to go outside again. That pretty much sums up our days lol

but I've got great dogs for the lazy lifestyle :) They are perfectly happy to be lazy right along with me

Before we had a house sitter if we were going away the dogs went off to the kennel. Now it's nice because we don't have that added step when we go away... our friend just comes right over and lives here for the week and takes care of everything.

Sometimes i think we just co exsist lol

You know what's sad? I've had Wink for almost 7 months and her grasp of basic obedience is about the same as it was when I first brought her home. She's completely untrained, yet she's such a flexible, adaptable dog that she's managed to get along just fine with me without needing to follow commands. I'm lazy.

I train other people's dogs all the time, I'm not an incompetent trainer, I'm just so terribly lazy when it comes to my own.

Oh, and my dogs haven't been walked in well over a week. It's 120 degrees outside - I open the door, they poke their noses out, go "Aw HELL no" and look at me like I'm nuts.

same here.

There are days where I ask Belle to sit and she just starts turning in circles lol. She's completely untrained. doesn't know how to do anything. But it works for her. She's just a good, mild mannered, easy dog to own. I could take her anywhere and she doesn't get out of control. She would probably just walk around wherever we were wishing she back home on her chair lol

But mostly, getting a second dog made me even more dog crazy
This!

Honestly, I'm laid back about some things like house manners, jumping, treats (I've used m&m's and twizzlers on more than one occasion for training treats) and things like loose leash walking and I'm certainly not on any kind of schedule with the dogs.

But on the flip side I am religious about training and exercise. The dogs will get trained daily and they will get run at least 4 times a week unless some crazy unforeseen things happen. But the thing is that's as much for them as it is for me. I go stir crazy if I don't get out and so do they. It's for all of our enjoyment but I'm the kind of person that hates being inside. Winter is when I go into hibernation and have to force myself to go out. With Kaylee I was more poking at her to make her do things when she would rather sleep, with Traveler I've got my go out and DO things partner

But I don't take much seriously so I might fall into the laid back intense dog owner :rofl1:

I'm super anal and uptight in some respects and not so much in other respects.

Two of my dogs play dog sports and Luce has, what, 10 rally titles and 1 obedience title and she absolutely positively CANNOT keep four on the floor when meeting people. When I get leashes out to put them on the dogs she leaps up in the air and bounces off me. Mushroom pulls on leash like it's his job and is leash aggressive. Steve resource guards and is leash aggressive. And I just... prefer to manage rather than fix because it's not a tremendous inconvenience to me and because I'm freaking lazy.

But health stuff, there I'm neurotic. I think a lot of it is because of my job- because I see the worst case scenario, and I'm always scared that my dog has the worst case scenario too. Steve gets a joint supplement and a fish oil supplement every day because that's what the recommendation of Big Name Sports Guru is. When he seems off, he gets physical therapy and/or massage even though I won't pay for a massage for myself. NEUROTIC I AM TELLING YOU.

Ehh, It depends. In general I consider myself a middle of the road dog owner. My dog cannot physically "go" all the time for playing/walks because of a bad knee. We have been really good lately about playing and going for walks. It has helped with his leg, but he still has limitations.

I am pretty lax on health and food. He gets fed a raw diet, but I will give him leftovers, waffles, lunch meat, etc (he has an iron gut). Overall he gets all he needs though. I am pretty laid back on certain health issues, but completely obsessed with others. I dont get him checked for every single thing, and let some things go on for longer then I should. Other things I am overly obsessed on. Like last week he had a stress response with is addisons that he was sick for. I watch all vomiting like a hawk because of his addisons too (I used to be Very lax on vomiting). I think I will be more obsessed with training and exercise/activities with my next dog though!

This may be off topic but that's a terrible analogy. I've been doing rescue for as long as I can remember and being exposed to different foods is nothing like being exposed to germs.
It seems to me like if a dog NEVER had grains before, they'd be more likely to be intolerant of it. Maybe I'm wrong - I don't know much about food, just "the more meat, the better".

Nope not really. Think about it, it's unrealistic to think that dogs or even people are going to be exposed to EVERY type of food out there. But if I were to try a bite of lamb, or my dog tried something she's never had before.... we'd be okay. Intolerance/allergies are either there or not.
I mean, Juno was on a food with grains for most of her life, but she still does better on grain-free. It's just a common intolerance in dogs, just like milk in people.

Nope. That can sometimes be the case, but in many cases dogs are more likely to be intolerant of grains/filler after being raised on foods full of them. Genes can play a part too, and all sorts of other factors.

Interesting to read everything! I think that's one of the big problems I have- I am soooo lazy about training them to walk together nicely on a leash. Jude on his own is pretty good. But I just don't feel likeI can take the time to train Jonah right now. Every time we walk, we want exercise! Not stopping every two seconds to train him. I need to eventually, but am feeling pretty guilty about letting them pull. I guess I'm the one who truly suffers with this- as it's a pain in the neck! I've thought about taking the lazy mans route and doing harnesses so I don't have to train them better- but it cuts down on pulling- hah!

Suzie isn't very well trained. And its not because I'm just lazy with her, that is part of it, but the other part is that I've messed her up so much with my awful training, that I feel I can't fix it.

She doesn't mind though. She is really a great dog, she doesn't nip in excitement, or jump up and down. If she does jump up on someone new, its so gentle, she stands up, places her paws on you, and leans in for the petting.

She's fed not great food, but she has the shiniest and healthiest fur I've seen. The only thing I'm beating myself over is how we can NOT get the fleas off of her.

I'm neither lazy or obsessive.

We walk a minimum of 3 times a week, but average more than that. I LOVE walking, exploring and its meditation for me. If I didn't walk I'd go mad.

I don't train anymore really, but bodhi is nearly 6 and there's not much she needs to know. She's not perfect, but most people think she's well behaved, and she's great for me :D

I'm definitely keen to get another dog, and would love to do sports, more training. But purely for FUN.

We're Deffo laid back though. My other half is ruining bodhi though, spoils her ROTTEN :D

I've had a case of the lazies since my dog was laid up over a year ago. I get busy training a couple days or months a week but mostly it's walking and food toys. All veterinary care is done though, partly because I work at a clinic, but I've always been like that. They get good food supplemented with better foods and supplements to help with old dog syndromes.

We walk daily, it's just not very far. Tonight we took a 15 minute romp in the fields and through to the back woods. They were both sufficiently tired. Now I have time to do work *ahem, I mean... yeah, work.*

I hang out with my "dog friends" without dogs more than I do with my own dogs these days, for many reasons but... yeah, I'm lazier in general about stuffs regarding them.
