At what point when house breaking a puppy do you trust them enough to give them some freedom? I've had Wilson tethered to me for probably the last week and a half and have been rewarding for pottying outside and taking him out consistently. He's six months old so he should be able to hold it for a while?
Well, I start right away by letting them have freedom - I'm just always in their personal bubble so I don't miss anything. I don't do much tethering, if I can't watch that closely then they're crated. But leaving them loose gives me the chance of noticing/developing that signal of them going to the door when they want to go outside, which is ultimately what I want.

Hallelujah! Happy New Year!

I was getting a little down on our potty training program. I thought we were doing well at taking Pox out regularly and have learned the routine. Then we had a bad day where he ran away when he had to go and peed on the stairs landing once and then under the guest bed. Before this, he would always run toward the door at least.

Well today I think we may have made a breakthrough! So far Pox successfully used the dog door 3 times without any prompting when he had to go. Like, he got off the couch, ran immediately out the dog door and off the deck to go. He has never gone out on his own before and it's reeally cold outside. So proud of him!

I kept thinking about how much work Jari still needs :p
Well that's not much help! I have one getting on in years with soundness issues and one motivated solely by heat with a tiny brain. I have foster pups right now, but they're pointer/pit mixes and mostly serving to remind me why I only love stock dogs.

Histamine and Potato just played with each other in my office while I was cleaning his cage. Had to have been the cutest thing ever to see a Guniea Pig and a petite cat following each other around the room. I have some pretty awesome animals. <3

I got to see Sir last night, the pit bull that I owned with my Ex boyfriend for a year and a half before we split and he took him...

holy crap the feels.

They're moving across the country this weekend, and I would be lying if I said that I'm not upset about it.

I gave my ex two grocery bags full of dog stuff for Sir... bags of treats, his pulling harness, a collar, some bandanas, a food bowl, toy, natural calming sprays/liquids, canned dog food...

Sir, Recon and Pilot all got to play together. Such a bittersweet night.

I scheduled Cajun's spay for next Friday

One of the things I'm most worried about is dealing with her and the breakfast routine. lol. What is more painful.... feeding the other 3 dogs and not feeding her, or feeding NOBODY and having somebody else feed them after I leave with Cajun. Both options sound miserable.

When I have to fast one of my crew, I generally put them in the car crate in my vehicle in the garage while I feed everyone else. LOL

I'm housesitting overnight and brought Brisbane with me last night. I was filling up my car with gas and someone was acting a little weird nearby, but I wasn't too concerned because I had my Briz in the car and he will happily bite anyone who tries to invade my space.

Meanwhile back home, someone tried to walk into the house at 1am and was apparently dissuaded by the stampede of dogs rushing to greet them. My husband bemoaned that I had taken Brisbane and not someone else with me.

Briz is getting a little mellow as he gets older. He doesn't always leap up and rush to the door while barking furiously. Sometimes I forget how much security I derive from his mere presence. I need to get another horrible hellbeast before Brisbane gets too much older.

I'm hard-hearted, I just feed everyone else normally and ignore who ever is complaining/sad-eyed. (Mine all eat physically separate from one another, though, so it's easy to say/do.)

The other day we had a house full of people, and my aunt brought her 15 month old grand daughter. Cobain's never really had much experience with kids or babies, and he's not the biggest fan of them. But he made damned sure that whenever the little one was walking about that he blocked off the stairs so she wouldn't fall down them.
It was really interesting to see that.

Hahahahah never thought of banishing her to the car. That would be interesting :p

Also, dunno who here has them, where do the fun colored fur saver collars come from? Haven't looked too hard yet but can't find them lol.

Some days I feel like I'm surrounded by idiots. What took the cake today...

My neighbors commenting on how Roxie's Hurtta coat didn't look warm enough (we were just getting back from a walk). Bro. This is made by a Finnish company. Y'know, from Finland. Finland is COLD. I think they know how to make a warm coat. It's frickin 30 degrees today, it's not even that cold!! I only put this coat on because I don't have water proof coats- I just have a hoodie and a Fido Fleece, and it's too hot for Fido Fleece and the Hurtta coat. Plus we went out hiking, and I didn't want Roxie to freeze halfway through.

So I asked the lady if she wanted to put her hands under the coat and feel how warm it actually is.

"OH MY! Now, that is TOO warm! Poor dog is probably frying her insides!"

I can't.

So the story of Hank and his twin in agility is really intriguing me. They look a ton alike. Both tricolor and mottled. Both around 20 lbs. She's a bit taller (and I like her build better tbh lol). They make the same shrieky noises like I have never heard a dog make before. They were pulled from the same shelter and are guessed as the same age. She's split faced. He's drivier and she's calmer (by a bit) and more reserved. Mannerisms are similar. Both drivey, very intense, very athletic dogs. They were told she was a rat terrier x cattle dog but her DNA test came back border collie x terrier breeds.

Supposedly she was part of a litter that came to a local rescue at 3 weeks old. They were fostered and then adopted out but she was adopted by a med student and was crated 12+ hour shifts. She ended up turned in to the city shelter. Rescue found out about her and pulled her and adopted out to my classmate in september at 8 months old. Same month I adopted Hank.

BUT the only hangup in all this is he's docked and she's not. :/ My classmate is convinced they are siblings though. I've been stalking the rescue facebook because he thought there might be pics of the litter. I just can't see why someone would dock one puppy and not the other and I am 99.9% sure Hank is docked and not a natural bob.

ETA: Other issue I thought of is Hank was intact when he was picked up and if he'd gone through that rescue he would have been neutered as a puppy.
