I have read in a number of places, that if your dog's diet is good, he shouldn't have that "doggy odor". Do you find this to be true? Leo smells like a dog (especially when wet!) and I don't think I have ever been around a dog that didn't smell "doggy". So, does your dog smell like dog and what food do you feed???

Could be a number of things.

When we first got our dog, he was SMELLY. I mean there is dog smell and then there is DOG SMELL.

The smell could come from a number of places. We have a cocker spaniel, so the ears are a big issue and were cause of some of the smell. Some people say anal glands are another.

And yes, the food makes a big difference. When we first got him he was being fed a cheap brand. Now, he is on Innova. And I would say other than a faint dog smell, the smell is almost totally gone.

while much does depend on a good diet and keeping the dog clean, some dogs just have more of an odor than others.

ellie, my wirehaired dachshund for example never had any "doggy odor" at all. the only reason she got baths was because she loved to dig up rodent nests and roll in every mud hole or remains of any dead animal she could find.

quigley is different. he does have a terrier coat which is short since i hand strip regularly and he eats a home prepared diet, but he definitely isn't entirely odorless like ellie was. i'm sure he would smell a lot worse if he weren't eating a good diet and didn't have nice, clean teeth and ears.

One of the things I noticed and pointed out to Charley was that none of our dogs smells "doggy" on the EVO. Even Bimmer, and GSDs are notorious for having a doggy smell.

German Shepherds tend to have really active and musky oil glands. They can get pretty doggy, especially if their food isn't good . . . Shiva only farts when she's been stealing something she shouldn't  Bimmer never farts, and it's so rare that Kharma does you might as well say she doesn't either.

Poor Mikey's just trying to fit in with Steve, lol!

If you did, I missed it. Sounds like you need to start a thread on that one :) Shame you don't have it on video . . . you could use that old sea chanty "Blow the Man Down" for the soundtrack :p

you know, evo is a great food and all, but i've noticed that quigley tends to get "dog breath" from it when i feed it on road trips etc., while here's no smell from his mouth at all on his regular food.

...other than tripe breath that is! lol :D
