Ok, so my male beagle has been licking his dong consistently over the past 24 hours. I took a look and there is a little bit of white fluid. And it also happens to smell very foul. I did some research online and it sounds like it's smegma. Does this sound right?

And at what point, should I take him to the vet? What goes beyond normal sheath cleaning? At least, that's what people online say the dog does to remove the smegma.

Dog smegma is white? Interesting! A horse's certainly is not when you have to clean them. It's all icky and dark coloured.

If he looks like he's in pain or is doing it excessively it may be time for a trip to the vet. If not let him be. He'll take care of himself.

Yep. ;)

Maybe because horses can't reach around to clean themselves? Or because, to put it delicately, they're longer then a dog, so there's more room for "build up"? No, I'm not trying to be funny, just thinking about why the different colors.

Good advice! :)

the 'bean' is often a whitish grey.

To the OP I agree a vet visit is warranted.

Thanks for the advice.

Day later and there's still white stuff, and it still smells funky. He's licking every once and a while, but he doesn't seem in pain and his wang does not seem irritated. For those in the know on smegma, how long should it take to clear up?

Also, apparently smegma is common on dudes who aren't circumsized. And it supposedly smells on them. How I came across that you ask? I googled "smegma smell" and there it was.

One of my males had this and would leave " spots " on windows and walls . The vet gave me a salve and I had to pull back his sheath and apply .

While a buildup can be normal, if it is stinky it may be infected. If he is licking lots then it is bugging him. I think a vet visit would be the best idea!

Thanks, he stopped licking it last night, so I'll keep an eye on him. If he starts going at it again, I'll bring him in.

Might still be a good idea to check it out -- you don't want a full fledged infection somewhere. If the odor was there, the problem may still be ...

Hasn't been licking for days now, and the odor is gone. Don't think a vet is needed. Looks like he just needed to clean himself.

If it's foul smelling, it could be a sign of an infection and you should see a vet.

Here's a story with info about the symptoms and how it's treated. It's interesting that neutered dogs usually don't have smegma issues...yet another good reason to neuter!
