Just recently we have been having some serious problems with Bailey barking. He will walk up to me, sit, and look at me. If I don't respond, he will start barking and yapping! This is after he goes to the bathroom, so I know he doesn't have to go outside. I have just been ignoring it, since I know he is doing it for attention, but that doesn't seem to help.

I try using the can with pennies (throwing it on the ground when he barks, and then rewarding him as soon as he is quiet), but I don't always have the can near me, and I hate having to go fetch it when I am in the middle of doing something.

Additionally, his crate is in the living room. We hardly ever have problems with him barking in his crate, UNLESS he can hear us talking in the other room. Last night my husband went to bed after watching television in the guest bedroom, and since he passed the crate on his way to our bedroom, Bailey started barking and crying. For probably 15 minutes! Of course, we ignored it, but we live in an apartment building so this is really unacceptable behavior. Then this morning, he started crying again, all on his own!

Could someone please explain what is going on with him and what I should do to help stop this behavior??

I know the answer to this one! :) I'll PM you a link to an article with what's going on, why it's happening, and how to fix it. If you have any questions about it, please ask.

Emma, oh Emma! Any chance that might be part of BigDoggyDaddy's Rocky barking dilemma? I thought it was probably Rocky telling him it was time to pay attention and play/talk to the puppy (what mine always did when they were pups - sometimes even now, lol) but I could always be on the wrong track . . .

Ooh, I hate to tell you, but GSDs are vocal! :) There's a big difference between talkative dogs and dogs who are being just a little snotty. :D I think the sounds GSDs make are really pretty charming, but of course I don't live with one! If you want to tell me what noises she makes and in what situation, I can tell you if there's a possibility of quieting her down a little...
