Schnauzer help!

Help! I have a STandard Schnauzer female, just 6 months old. I am working on training her all the time, but I have a few problems I really need to resolve ASAP:

1) She jumps up to counters or table to grab what is on them, no matter what I do (rattle a coffe can with pennies in it, growl at her, push her away and say "off")
2) She jumps out of her crate when excited. She is learning to go in to the crate when I command "crate" but she is rather um determined um.

You need to beef up her sit and lie down and stay. Keep the counters clear when you're not right there. You must prevent her from scoring when she does that. Start working on differential behaviors. Like.....when she is away from the counter, lying down chewing on her toy, walk over to her and give her a chunk of meat. Teach her that by coming close to the counters, nothing good happens. But staying away, not getting onto the counters for food, she WILL get food. Teach her "leave it." Using punishment doesn't work very well, as you're finding out.

The jumping out of her crate....she needs to learn "wait." You can practice at other times....not with her crate. Then try it there. Be ready to close the door on her if she rushes it. Rushing the door does not work to get out. When she waits for just a second, get that very important release word in, such as, "ok" or "release" (whatever) She needs to learn that until she hears that word, she is to wait. Then very gradually, increase the duration she must wait and hear her release word before she gets out. She must learn that waiting/release word IS what gets her what she wants...to get out. Rushing the door like a maniac does NOT work to get out. No punishment needed other than preventing her from busting out.

Thanks to both-I will work more on those things. She is one of those female dogs for whom learning the word "no" is difficult, although she is getting better. I will post a pic when I get a good one!
