Hi Mordy
I feed the Kirkland Chicken and Rice. Would you mind telling me what you do and do not like about this food?
THANK YOU!

I know I am not Mordy so I hope you don't mind if I answer too!

Dodger tried it as a puppy so the ingredients may have changed since then but my issues with it are/were: beet pulp, brewer's yeast, menadione (synthetic vitamin K3) and salt was a little too high on the list for me. There were lots of fillers and as such Dodger was pooping all the time. And the stench of the food drove me nuts (Dodger who as a hound eats anything wouldn't go near this food at first).

The good part is that for the price, its probably the best food to feed (but if you can afford it, there's way better foods out there!)... It didn't have any corn or by-products when I fed it either so that was good!

They have since improved their formula and I don't believe it contains menadione anymore. I am not too sure the brewer's yeast is in there anymore either, but I don't know for sure.

Beet pulp in some cases can be a very beneficial ingredient.

I'm glad they've improved their formula! I couldn't find a link to their current ingredient list!

I personally do not like beet pulp because its not digestable and is used as a stool hardener (whether or not its needed). It unnaturally stops peristalsis and keeps their poops looking healthy to us but could be masking a problem IMO. It uses saponins to slow digestion which can be done using natural sources, so I don't see the point (especially when almost all brands have mroe than enough fillers/fibre to harden the stool)!

Thanks for the link!!! :)

It's not a food I would choose to feed based on: egg product, beet pulp, brewers dried yeast, menadione sodium bisulfite and the salt contents a little high IMO... It's also too grainy for my liking but I fully admit I'm picky!!:p

I did read the piece but the source isn't really impartial...I mean any company backs what they put in their food, whether its a quality ingredient or not. And I had a bit of a laugh when the article talked about a kentucky derby winner eating beet pulp - equine and canine digestive systems are entirely different.

Anyway, I hope people who have fed or who do feed Kirkland come along - I am just one opinion out of many!!! :)

My parent's have 8 Shih-tzu's (rescues) anyway... They needed something pretty good, yet affordable (they were feeding Science Diet) So I got them on KirkLand and the dogs are doing better then ever on it!

For people on a budget or with a lot of dogs to feed I think this is a very good choice compared to other store brands. I don't think it looks bad at all.

She's on vacation. We'll have to bump up these food threads and bombard her when she comes back. LOL.

Interesting link about the beet pulp. Thanks for posting that.
