Hey guys, it's the clueless north african puppy adopter again. I've got a question.

So today was Java's third day of living with me instead of on my friend's porch. So he's getting way more exercise(running and playing with the other dogs, following me around a little bit, chewing, way more free time basically) and tonight something happened that has me wondering about my puppy.

We don't know for certain but we think he's five months old(give or take a few weeks).

We built a campfire out by the outside wall and at first Java was kind of into it. Sniffing around and keeping pretty close and guarding us from the imaginary bad men in the shadows. But then a little later I was like "Where's Java?" So I went and found him curled up asleep on the porch where he used to live. It was like eight thirty at the latest.

And yet at other times I'll let him out and he'll follow one of my friends about a half mile away and then walk right back and find me where he left me. Or in the mornings while I'm working outside he'll go off and play, but every once in a while he'll come sprinting to me(from out of sight and around corners) as if just to say hi.

This has me thinking. Is this normal puppy behaviour? Does he just not like fire? Is he not a velcro dog? Or, did I somehow not get quite imprinted enough in his younger puppyhood because he lived on my friend's porch? And, if that is the case can it happen later? I also remember that he's a feral dog from off the streets of Cairo so I wonder if maybe for that reason he's a little more aloof. I don't know.

And because I don't know I think it's a great idea for us to talk about it a little bit. What do you guys think?

He sounds a bit confused but he will get there. My dog went to bed at 8:30 or earlier then that at that age. If he is coming back to "check" on you, then your deffinately a very important factor in his life. Just give him time.:) I am just pleased as punch to hear from you for i had wondered how your puppy was doing.

Wow, thanks. I'm touched that you would remember.

Yeah, its only been about three days now but having him live with me seems to be working really well. And lets not forget that people adopt adult dogs all the time and that always works out after a while too(well not always but you know what I mean).

As for me, I'm off for bed. I'll check this thread again tomorrow.
