I'm getting ready to go volunteer at my local humane society, and was wondering if there are any precautions I should take to reduce the possibility of bringing home any diseases etc. I'm already planning to wear a different pair of shoes and of course wash my hands, but should I also change my clothes before I enter my house?

To be honest, I don't. Unless I know I came in contact with a sick dog (I helped hold one for medicated bath) I came home, change clothes and showered before interacting with the dogs. Or my clothes are really dirty, lol.

But if your dogs are healthy, on a good diet, have had shots & are free and clear of parasites or infections or anything like that it shouldn't be a problem.

Kudos to you for volunteering!!

When i volunteered at the shelter I would ALWAYS keep an extra pair of clothes/shoes with me to change out of when I went home. and threw the clothes I wore all day in a bag and put them in the laundry room

ur shoes especially can carry a lot of yuckies on them

purell and stuff like that for your hands/ wash your hands before leaving the shelter

other than that if ur dogs are healthy and UTD on vaccinations, you should be fine :)

Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback. While I love all dogs, mine take precedent.

I volunteered at a shelter before, and I am planning on starting again, all I did was wear another pair of sneakers and use hand sanitizer when I got home and my dog never got sick from me patting dogs. So I say if you just wash your hands good and your dog has all his/her shots up to date, you should be fine.
