Hey all,
We had both of our dogs boarded at a kennel and when we picked them up one of ours a alaskan malamute/lab mix came back itching herself like she had fleas so we didn't think of it as anything big and just treated her for fleas she still kept itching and she was treating a second time now it is looking like mange or however you spell that? We read online to wash everything like dog beds blankets everything we cleaned the furniture yesterday and are washing everything constantly. We are not positive it is mange. We also read it is contagious not only to our other dog but to humans! DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY suggestions as what to do or what to treat her with? We are giving her a bath today and also our other dog and we will keep giving them a bath every 10 days, to make sure our other dog doesn't get it and try to get rid of it on our other dog. We looked at pictures online of dogs with mange and hers is not NEARLY as bad as the pics. We will of course not take either of them back to that boarding, should we call them and let them know? Or is there anything out at the kennel that they would have to worry about like germs from it? We're leaving in an hour to go to PetsMart and ask them what to do (they also have a vet there) we're going to buy whatever is needed but if you all have any suggestions, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!
THANKS SO MUCH....The first think I thought to do was get on Chazhound and see what info I got;)

Please take the dog to the vet. They can do a test to see what it is.
Petsmart will NOT know how to treat this and neither will a vet there. With no postitive diagnosis.....they will never know how to treat it correctly.

And mange can get extrememly severe. I would do it before it gets worse. :)

After an accurate diagnosis I would call the kennel if it is mange or anything contagious. I would also expect them to pay the vet bill. (if it can be traced to their kennel) Did you sign a contract there?

I second the "bring the dog to a Vet ASAP " advice. Mange can be a nasty thing to cure. They may have to dip the dog or give it a proper dose of Ivermectin, which is something only a vet can prescribe. They probably will do a skin scraping also, while your dog is there. By the way, didn't you have the dog on Frontline or Advantix when you brought it to be boarded? If they have communal playtime, she could have picked up fleas from one of the other dogs and she may have allergies to flea bites.....

No matter how you wish to treat the dog, you must take it to the vet.

Buddy had a bought of demodectic mange and treatment was costly and hard on all of us. If he were to have it again, we would go with a holistic treatment.

Your dog needs to be seen by the vet to determine what the problem really is, before you try any treatment. Doing a treatment on your own may harm your dog more.

Good luck.

Thanks so much! It may be the flea thing and she has allergies to them because she was playing with other dogs and she has never had fleas that we've seen on her so maybe she just got a bad case of them. Yes, shes was on flea med befor she went to the kennel, our vet said in September that the flea stuff we were using was working, she had none at that time. No, we did not sign a contract with the kennel, the kennel is bonded and insured. She is not acting weird in any other way, but were limiting her time outside to only time to use the bathroom so just in case it could get worse it wont that way. I will let you all know how everything goes.
Thanks so much!

I would take the dog right away. Is your other dog showing any signs?

If you suspect mange, it's best to get to a vet right away.

Mmm hmm. Vet definately. They'll do a skin scrape and if it comes back positive probably start you on mitaban dips.

Thanks for all the suggestions, we took her to the vet right away and she DOES NOT HAVE MANGE!!YAY!I was so scared that she had mange and I know it is deadly:( She got a lot of fleas from the kennel we took her too and she is allergic to them the reason we thought it was not that was because, she likes to be outside a lot at our house and we have a fenced yard so she spends a lot of time out there but we like it when she is inside which she does of course sleep inside. So, are yard must not be infested in fleas! We decided to upgrade to k9 advantix flea med instead of hartz. But, Hartz has always kept her flea free until now.
Thanks,
Amanda

I am glad you are not using Hartz anymore. Not only is it ineffective it is not nearly as safe.....as some of the other choices. :)

Yeah!! No Mange. ;)

hartz is crappy and notorious for not working, so i think you'll have much better success with the advantix. also- do not bathe her frequently- that'll dry out the skin and make her even more itchy.

mange is generally not deadly. it's a PITA, though, so i'm really glad your dog doesn't have it.

I also say VET VISIT,,you can quess till the cows come home but if it's mange and you don't treat it PROPERLY, it will get worse and worse..

one of my dogs had demodectic as a puppy, his was easy to treat..My aussie just came down with sarcoptic last year, which is contagious to humans and dogs,,this dog slept with me everynite, I swear I was itching as much as her, tho contagious, the "mites" like living on a dog better than a human..

To treat, a special dip is required and some treat with Ivermectin..(couldn't do that iwth my aussie, mdr1 gene thing going on!)..

Don't guess, get the dog to a vet and find out before it get's worse..and if it's nothing, all the better.

VET! motion forwarded.
Sarcoptic mange also affects humans... we call it scabies urgh!!
Tests will be carried out and you will probably get a dip which should be applied for about 5 weeks and not rinsed out. It is always good to use the dip on bedding etc too.

I find with my dogs, or I should say, (Sadie), this time of year brings up her itchy egszyma (sp. check). My daughter, Taylor, has spurts of 'sort of the same' flare-ups.

The only thing that Hartz flea stuff does is make money for Hartz. As far as preventing fleas, it's worthless..That's why I asked if you had your dog on Advantix or Frontline....

Our Golden Retriever has a weakened immune system, most likely cause by her poor breeding. She'll be 3 on Valentines day and has come down with mange twice. We just go to our local feed store and the guy prescribes us a dose of Ivermeticin according to her breed/weight. The second dose is given 14 days after the first. We also get a nice spray that helps relieves the itching and helps the coat grow back.

Her first time it was horrible but the second time we were able to treat it quickly and she only had a mild reaction.
