I have 3 dogs. All of which I saved from various places.

Dixie, my eldest, was found on the side of the road.. And later we picked her up from the local shelter when she was just around the age of 2-3 months.. I do not have pics from when we adopted her.. But many of you have seen the pics of her at the age of 7.

Tillie, my middle one, was just rescued from from a kill shelter this past August. This is how she looked then..

and now, she is 15lbs heavier and very happy..

Jaxon, my youngest, was rescued from an accident litter of 10 all of which did not find a home would have been sent to the kill shelter [the only one nearby].
He was full of fleas, dirt, and worms..

Now he is happy and healthy!!

Dixie is afraid of big trucks, Tillie is scared of cardboard boxes, and I am hoping we got Jaxon early enough that nothing scarred him for life.

PLEASE SAVE THE PUPS IN NEED!!

I just wanted to share our stories in hopes that someone somewhere may read this and reconsider then take a trip to their local shelter!

My traffic stopping, matched pair of hounds is also second hand. There's nothing like a good used dog.

Wow, Tillie is stunning! And good for you. Purebreds certainly have their place, and there are people for whom buying a purebred is the right answer. But there is something very special about taking in a dog who really needs a home. Meg was pulled from a high-kill shelter in the south and brought up to Vermont for me by a friend who does rescue. I'm met scores of dogs in her rescue over the last two years, and I love to see the reports of them in their new homes.

Both rescues and slated to die. Both needed extensive medical done. Both are mine and I am glad someone else gave up on them because because of their cruelty or lack of care I have the two best sweeties one could ever want. And they are all mine until death us do part. I could not agree more. Pure breeds end up homeless too. Go and get a shelter dog unless you are going to show .

I've talked about Uncle Fred before. Starved, beaten, collars grown into neck twice, assorted worms and protozoa., So scared the shelter warned me he was thought to have brain damage. He was only nine months old. It's only five months later. Everyone now assumes that my gorgeous, loving, funny, and friendly hound isn't neutered because he is a show dog and I am breeding him (Don't worry-never). Like I said, nothing like a good used dog.

Minnie was picked up from a shelter by someone else who found her too much to handle. We got her something like six weeks ago at 10-11 months. She wasn't housebroken, didn't know her name ("Snoopy" at the time), and had horrific house manners. Now she has a nice recall, knows her name, walks nicely on a leash, sits, and is Uncle Fred's best buddy. She still eats anything she can get, though.

Right now they are curled up together and Uncle Fred is using his Beagle as a pillow.

The only thing is, I would really like to get my hands on Uncle Fred's former owner.

Of course I very much agree! I foster dogs, so I have tons of stories.
But I wanted to share my forever dog, who was rescued

My Missy is from a pound that has a low adoption %
The first pic is the ones from her petfinder page. That's how I first saw Missy, she was very nervous - at the pound. The warden told us that she was an "owner release" the story they owners gave is that they found her as a stray, and decided to keep her as an outside dog, but then couldn't due to certain circumstances... The second picture is the first day in our house. She was very hesitant to lay on the blanket we set up for her. When she finally did lay on it, she slept for a very long time. She was skin and bones.

This is Missy after a month or so living with us. You can tell that she was still very skinny - she initially gained weight, but then dropped again because her stomach wasn't conditioned to handling food, and her immune system was down so she got sick with intestinal micro-organism parasites (which I had never heard of before then)

The vet said this could've been caused by being starved, having very unstable feeding times, and/or very poor nutrition.
She still has weird eating habbits that she is learning to get past... but she's doing TONS better...

This is Missy now! People litterally don't believe me when I say she's from the pound. I have been asked multiple times what bloodlines she's from, and whether I show her LOL. She's one of those dogs who are naturally well behaved. She wasn't food motivated, so training her to do commands like sit, down, and stay were a challenge at first, but now... you would never know! She's my sister, my daughter, my guardian, and my friend. And I love her! <3

Yup, rescue dogs are great :D I have one myself.

I rescue Lizzie from a high-kill shelter at the age of 5 weeks. She and her brothers and sister had only a bit of time left. She needed lots of medical treatments since she was flea infested.

Now at the age of 3 she is living a wonderfully, happy life.

Benji counts as a rescue dog, I think :). My sister was at some shopping center in a little shop next to a VERY busy highway called Route 1, and the shop owner brought little Benji to her attention. Benji was allowed by his owners to roam the streets, and he would come to that shop every day and get fed hot dogs, and the shop owner said that SOMETIMES his owner would come pick him up, and even said she'd witnessed him hitting Benji and throwing him around. So my sister took Benji home!

Benji had no training of any sort, had no idea how to live in a house, didn't know how to eat out of a bowl (my sister had to hand feed him at first), was hand shy, and it was three days before he heard him bark (now he won't shut up!). We vetted him and got him neutered. It took three months to housetrain him (granted, we didn't try THAT hard, we just stuck a diaper on him when he was in the house. He let us know he was ready by chewing it off one day.) Two years later, Benji is a totally different dog! He's very happy and boisterous, rarely has an accident (if he does, its our fault for leaving him inside too long), and loves to snuggle with us on the couch.

When I move into my own place, I will adopt more rescue dogs.

The Unwanted Kitties and Puppies video in the post above would go good on this thread, too.

Oakley was rescued from another kill shelter the day he was supposed to be put to sleep.

We are unsure of his condition when the rescue rescued him, but he was brought to the initial shelter after found wandering the streets as an itty bitty puppy in the heart of winter :(

He was well taken care of it seems at the new rescue, so his before pic isn't bad :
