So I was looking through the judging program, and in the front it says that if you stay in a hotel/motel for the dog show, to put plastic under any crates in the room.

Why? Is there some special reason I'm not thinking of? Is it intended for dogs that aren't potty trained? In case they vomit/diarrhea out of the cage? For wire crates?

I have a vari-kennel type crate that I plan on taking for the motel room. We're staying at a Motel 6 on Saturday night. The website itself doesn't say anything about putting plastic under crates in the pet policy, it just says to try not to leave the dog alone, and if you have to leave them alone, put them in a crate.

So...should I get plastic for under the crate? If so, what kind of plastic?

I'm guessing it's for the dogs who aren't house-trained, although if it's a wooden floor, I'd say they don't want them scratched (of course, I don't think I've ever seen an UNcarpeted hotel room...) I'd just throw a couple of large plastic trash bags underneath.

If they have potty accidents, get sick, spill food/water out of their crate, heavy shedding the plastic under the crate - and spread out past the edges of the crate - will minimize damage to the carpet.

It's generally not a motel request, but when a motel agrees to allow dog show competitors with their dogs to stay, it's a big risk to the motel and it's good showmanship to make sure the motel is happy when everyone leaves.

It's getting harder to find host hotels for dog shows and damage done by dogs is one of the reasons for that.

We're not staying at the host hotel (because they're expensive :p $50 at Motel 6 is pushing it), but I think I'll throw some trash bags under the crate anyway, just to be on the safe side.

I never had any problems with potty accidents with my dogs in hotel rooms but I usually brought a couple of old sheets to throw on the floor to minimize the amount of hair being deposited and to catch any crumbs from food. It was more for the dogs than the hotel (yes, I'm one of those people who will NOT walk barefoot on a hotel carpet). Not having my dogs eat off that floor either!! :D

Its just so nothing leaks out of the sides, some boys feel the need to mark in their crates, so we just put a piece of hard plastic inbetween the crates.

I've also been in crating areas in indoor soccer fields and the like that want some mat under the crate to keep it from marking the floor. A reasonable enough request whatever the reason. I buy $.99 shower curtain liners and just toss them when the get old or start to get moldy (from using them under crates at outdoor trials to keep my crate dry).

ooh shower curtain liner is a great idea. i've been using a tarp i bought cheap at big lots, but i'm sure i'll leave it somewhere before too much longer :p (i trial in a lot of dirt/sand-floored places and plastic under the crate minimizes the mess *in* the crate)

I'm pretty sure the Motel 6 we stayed in in Tulsa had all those things in it, with the (possible) exception of the last two, before we even went in the room :lol-sign:
