instead of the u.s focusing on iraq and small things like that they should concentrate on persuading people not to do certain things like this crisis you are talking about now

I really can't understand how Japan can say their slaughtering of whales is for scientific research! It makes me so outraged. Did you see on the news the report about the Japanese classes teaching people (and kids) how to cook whale in different ways? Last year around christmas time I went to WA and went on a whalewatching trip and it was SO amazing to see these big wild animals jumping and leaping out of the water. There was even a mother and her calf. I just can't believe how people can kill these precious and endangered animals! :(

Mrose,
This is a subject near and dear to my heart. Since I was a small child I've been outraged at the senseless slaughter of the whales. I think you are wonderful for wanting to do something about it. You can make a difference. Letter writing is a good place to start and, as you are doing now, bringing it to people's attention. Good for you!! :)

Mrose,
Writing letter campaigns can be highly effective. Do some research on what public officials have the power to change the laws and start writing them. What I used to do, once I had that info, is fill out many envelopes with the appropriate address already written on it, then I'd inform everyone I knew and encourage them to write a letter of complaint and give them the all-ready to mail envelope. The more people who write, the more of an impact it will have.

Also, you could contact some groups such as Defenders of Wildlife and World Wildlife Fund. You may think about joining them.

Keep us posted, I'm cheering for you!

check out this website ...
www.saveourwhales.org/
it is about Japan and their plans. Let me know what you figure out because I want to help as well. I am planning on going on one of those whale watching trips this summer right off Cape Cod. I hate to think about these poor creatures being slaughtered. You let me know what you need me to do and I will do it!

I've signed the petition. I'm like Irish - this has been dear to my heart for years - when I see programmes about Whale hunting it makes me cry. Just read that the Korean government are also trying to restart commerical whaling too :(.

Take a look at this from the Greenpeace website, Virtual March to Keep Whales Alive! they are organising a virtual march for 19 June - how about we all do that as well?

If its in international waters I think they have a right to hunt whales. It's clearly a cultural issue. If they are not breaking any international laws, they have a right to their fishing.

You must not live in America or Australia, or any other countries affected by terrorism. Otherwise you wouldn't post such irresponsible statements.

the war in Iraq is a bad and horrible war, we sent soldiers in with nothing more than a hunch about what was being "hidden" there. I think we should be focusing on other things
my mother says, "if you do something about, fight for it. if you can't don't worry about it"
the war in Iraq is horrible but whaling could drive so many species to extinction.

and Martine, I'll take part in that virtual march, i havn't read it just yet but i'll let you know.
do you think we could get a moderator to put something about it as a sticky incase someone doesnt see this post?

siemens, I believe Bulloxer was stating that we should focus more on the war in Iraq. I think he was being smug not irresponsible.

Mrose, although I admire your heart and understand your plyth, but there are ALOT of causes people could get behind. I'd rather spend my time helping all the helpless dogs and animals in shelters. That's why this is a dog forum, isn't it?

We obviously can't help every cause that comes along. I agree with siemens. Sorry.

ok, suit yourself, but these are wild animals, this is a dog forum, but also, an animal-lovers forum and I do belive that the more poeple that are willing to help the more we will do about it.
A lot of people do feel strongly about this subject and this is a good place to get everyone interested and motivated at the one time.

Martine, i have printed out my banner

I'd like to get behind every animal issue - but I'd need some majic time enhancing potion as there are so many. But this specific one rings bells for me, everyone has to make their own decisions about these things. Anyway, back to the Whales, I've printed my banner, now just trying to explain to Bill why I want a photo with a piece of paper - cue the strange looks - lol!!
