Hey Everyone :)

Im currently doing my 3rd tafe course on vet nursing. Iv'e been given an assignment, where i have to foster a litter of 2-3 week old kittens from either a breeder or cat protection society. I have studied vet nursing books and searched many sites. Ive gotten everything that i think i need such as:

*Bottle + teat
*Milk replacer
*Heat pad/water bottle and bedding
I just wanted to know if thats all i need for raising them and also if anyone could tell me some of there experiences when hand rearing them, and what did u personally do to keep them alive and healthy.
Sorry for the looong question lol i just really want 2 know everything there is to know and i dont want 2 do anything wrong and loose a kitten.

Thankyou so much for your time :)

Candace xx

Candace,

I have reared two kittens who had to be taken from their feral/wild mother, because she kept moving them, and the lady whose porch, the cat had her babies on, was worried the kittens wouldn't survive, because it was very stormy, and there had recently been a tornado in the area. (They ended up taming, and keeping the mother as a pet.) We took two of the kittens, and bottle fed them until they were about 5 weeks old, when we introduced them to wet kitten food. I can't remember how old they were when we aquired them, but their eyes were open, so I'd guess 2-3 weeks, which is the age you'll be taking your kittens. We used kitten formula from petsmart, and fed them several times a day (I wish I could tell you more in detail, but I was 10-11 at the time). We kept them in our parents closet in a crate with blankets, so my mom could hear them crying. We never did use any heating devices, but then again, we lived in east Texas at the time. The kittens grew up just fine, they were extremely loving (more so than any cats we'd ever owned before them) and we attributed this to the hand rearing. Fur-ball (Furbie), the grey kitten, was the sweetest thing, and would actually do commands. She'd 'talk' to you, and if you told her to stand, she would stand on her hind legs. Pumpkin, the cailco kitten, was just precious. She was 'my' kitten, and I loved her so, so much. She would actually lick your face, just like a dog would, and was very attached to me, she slept in my bed. Anyway, I thought I'd let you know what my experience was, although I think this may go in the 'other pets' board. ;) Good luck, let us know how it goes!
