Not sure if this is the correct place for this question.

Do you recommend pet insurance, and if so what company?

I've had my dog covered for a little over a year now and it's definitely worth at least looking into. It has been great for decreasing my vet bill costs, especially when my lil furry man needed meds to treat a skin problem. I have Trupanion and they have been really great thus far, especially since we filed 3 claims thus far and they don't have a payout limit and they cover 90% of medications, surgeries, diagnostic tests, accidents, and illnesses. Worth checking them out. I'm really happy with them.

There are a bunch of companies out there so just make sure you do your research on each one before you buy and make sure to read the policies. One thing that sold me on trupanion is that they only have one policy, some of the other companies have a lot and it gets confusing as to what is and isnt covered.

you should check out petinsurancereview.com for unbiased reviews on all the companies, I found that super helpful in my quest for doggy coverage, hehe. And here is another good comparison chart Trupanion vs. VPI - Compare Pet Insurance Companies | Trupanion Pet Insurance

Hope that's helpful! Good luck! :)

Be aware alot of companies require you to pay 100% of the vet bill, then they reimburse you. Its great if you have a good credit card but if you don't and you don't have the cash......

If I didn't work at a vet clinic, I'd have insurance on at least some of the dogs. Most vets do not allow payments, so if I'm already paying out the amount, getting some back would be nice

Thanks for the info, I've been looking for a dog insurance just IN CASE but was so confused by all the options. Trupanion seems pretty straight forward.

Someone on another forum has had good results with ..I think it's Pet's Plan..or a name pretty similar. I know several of her dogs have had surgery or other extensive treatment, and that she's gotten reimbursed very quickly.

I had VPI for one of my dogs and it paid for itself quite well the first few years. He was an accident prone puppy and I appreciated getting some reimbursement when he needed major surgery. The insurance was worth it for big bills but not for the smal things that come up. I now have VPI for a 1 1/2 year old dog but haven't had to use it. Just got a new puppy and I will insure him too. Like any insurance, ypu never know when or if you will need it but you are sure glad yo have it when or if the time comes.
