WTH are people thinking? Is the "I'm so cool! I own a wolf hybrid!" movement still going strong?

This beautiful creature was surrendered by its owner because she physically could not care for him. A wolf sanctuary is providing him with a home.

(this was from my other forum...not the commentary though ;) )

wow--what a gorgeous creature! Glad to hear that he will be properly cared for. I think people actually DON'T think --so much impulse and yes, "look how cool I am" going on with many "powerful" breeds. It's sad.

Hes beautiful! iM glad the sanctuary could take him in!!

Fortunately, Landlord and Condo associations around the city are starting to wise up and put wolves/wolf hybrids on the lists of dogs NOT ALLOWED so people in the city have mostly stopped buying them, which was the biggest problem as they were quite a "fad" for a while.

Little by little I've been hearing stories of wolves tearing up apartments, escaping, going nuts at the dog park, not being "safe pets".. from people who until recently thought they were "OMG SO COOL! I WANT ONE!"

So IMO people are wising up. Kind of like when everyone wanted a monkey until everyone heard that they throw poop at you lol

It's sad the hands that exotic or wild animals often end up in.

He's absolutely beautiful, what a cool looking animal! I have to admit I have a thing for anything that looks like a wolf, not that I'd ever, ever get a true hybrid. Nope, a black GSD will suffice! :)

Here we have so many that we have a dedicated sanctuary/rescue for them. Beautiful creatures to look at, not something that needs to be kept as a pet.

Man, he's gorgeous! Glad he's going someplace where he can be cared for properly.

My favorite that I encountered working as a tech, and I'm sure you've seen it too, are the ones that people insist are wolf mixes that have about as much wolf in them as my fat tabby cat. I remember one guy going on and on about how unfair the extra licensing was, and his dog was this lazy black & tan, big eared and bug eyed thing. It looked like a giant Chihuahua, actually. Fortunately, the ones that I suspected the most looked wolfish and were owned by responsible people who INSISTED that they were just Malamute mixes. The macho idiots tended to have the ones that seemed like generic northern breed mixes, thank goodness.

We had a barn dog at my old barn that was half rottie, 1/4 GSD, and 1/4 timber wolf. He was a huge, strange looking creature but a very, very nice dog all around.

Then my BFF in school's parents have one (I think she's still around) that is just downright dangerous, IMHO. She is VERY high prey drive and started attacking animals that she was raised with. She unsuccessfully tried to kill their cat and after a couple attacks eventually killed their poodle/chi mix. She was also *extremely* fear aggressive towards women. Fortunately she was terrified to the point of fleeing of men so that if I needed to go into the house DH went in from of me, because the hybrid would lunge at me if he did not. She could not be let out in the fenced yard because she was an escape artist. She was never able to be fully house broken and I'm sure still potties in the house daily. NOT an animal you could pay me to own.

Good luck to the pretty girl in the OP--I hope that the sanctuary can provide her with a good life.

When I was a kid we had a dog for a while that was from an oops litter out of a Beagle and a 3/4 Timber Wolf 1/4 GSD. He had short legs, a Beagle's coat type, and was red with a black saddle. His head was wolfish, but he had really long hound ears. I wish that I had pictures. He was about as ugly as a dog can be.

I know several people out of high school that went out and bought 'wolfdogs'. Luckily none of them ended up with ACTUAL wolfdogs. There's a couple people on my other forum with them (rescues) or that work in wolfdog rescues. Seeing the extreme amount of effort, time, and money they put into their wolves would make anyone stop and think about buying one. They have to have special outdoors enclosures that are escape proof. A lot don't seem to take to normal dogs and just can't be kept with domestic dogs. These people go out to wolf seminars all the time and strive to keep their wolves happy. It's an amount of dedication 99.9% of people don't have.

My old vet was into HC wolfdog rehabilitation and rescue and he almost always had a wolf that someone had surrendered.

I just don't get people to be honest. Beautiful beautiful creatures though. There is no dog breed that comes close to the beauty a wolf or wolfdog has.

There is a wolf sanctuary here. They're incredibly gorgeous animals. I'm just glad that the owner realized she was not the best home for him, sending him somewhere he will be properly cared for, rather than putting him down.

My neighbor had a high wolf content hybrid. At least, that was his story. I'm pretty sure the animal was an ill bred Malamute. Not just because of his look, but because he never once jumped my 3' electric fence to bother my sheep or lambs. This, I believe, is the kind of hybrid most wolf/dog owners should have.
