Whatever your beliefs on circumcision...... I mean, people allow this to happen to their babies?!

I hate it when people use tradition to mask something that is gross. Yeah, traditions are important, but so is moving with the times.

Religion is so bizarre.

Two more babies stricken with herpes after ritual ultra-orthodox Jewish oral blood sucking circumcision in New York City
Since 2000 13 known cases of herpes have been contracted from the religious practice
Two deaths and two babies suffering brain damage have resulted
Department of health warns there being no safe way to perform the ritual that dates back more than 5,000 years

It mentions in the article the department of health has gotten complaints from parents who didn't know this would be done to their child.

In general, the practice wouldn't bother me, except for the high risk of spreading disease. I can't imagine such a well-educated group of people in a developed nation are willing to take those risks on their babies.

Everything about this story hurts my brain!!!

Circumcision aside, I wouldn't like a religious man sucking my babies little finger, never mind his penis!!!

I don't care how he wants to dress it up!!!

Eew. I've never heard of them having to suck on the little digit when they circumsize out here? That's just... Wow.

That's beyond disgusting. I don't even know what to say other than some felony sex abuse/child abuse charges need to be handed out.

An adult man sucking on a baby's penis doesn't bother you?
If it's for a cultural/religious reason, and not for sexual reasons, no (except like I said, the risk of spreading disease). There are A LOT of cultures who do, or have in the past, used oral sex or some kind of fellatio techniques as various different coming of age/ceremonial/religious/whatever ritual on boys of various ages. Doing it as part of performing a cosmetic surgery on a tiny infant bothers me a lot less than the idea of permanently altering your child's physical appearance via an unanesthitized procedure, which is widely accepted here and I'm sure would horrify some cultures.

Yeh. Sorry. Not following the "it's ok...because religion" or "it's ok...because culture." Human sacrifice and cannibalism are part of some cultures, does that make it ok? Slavery is a part of some cultures, is that ok? Public shaming and stoning death of woman rape victims? Female circumcision? What about (hypothetically) female circumcision where the person who performed it then used his tongue to "cleanse" the area? Still fine?

All of those things you listed are way more damaging and harmful than someone using their mouth to stop bleeding (again, discounting sanitation reasons). I just don't understand why someone who isn't horrified or disgusted by circumcision in general would be horrified by this. People in other cultures are probably horrified by some of the revealing clothing we allow kids to wear or the sexual themes we expose them to in the media and say that's sexual abuse. There is absolutely nothing sexual about this practice, so in that sense I don't even see why it would be seen as disturbing or "sex abuse", especially when you're talking about a practice that involves removing part of a baby's penis. Should it be illegal for them to touch a baby's penis to clean it? What about changing bandages after circumcision??

So you'd be OK if an adult man performed clitoral hood circumcision on a female baby and then orally "stopped the bleeding?"

I just don't understand why someone who isn't horrified or disgusted by circumcision in general would be horrified by this.
I am disgusted by circumcision. Guess you missed that thread a few months back, huh? ;)

Oh I see, so sucking a baby's penis to "cleanse it" is exactly the same as washing one because it's dirty. So you'd be perfectly fine walking into a bathroom and seeing a parent at the changing station sucking on their baby's penis in order to "clean it," right? Because by your logic, that's exactly the same thing, as long as it's not sexual?

In a society where this is normal and everyone has it done, I kinda doubt it would be (psychologically) traumatizing.

But in reality, in this society... no. Most importantly, YOUR MOUTH IS NOT CLEAN ENOUGH TO PUT ON AN INFANT'S BLEEDING WOUND. I doubt this technique EVER worked well, not even in the 2000 BCE Middle East. Second of all, it's taboo in our society to put babies' penises in our mouths... couple that with the fact that it's causing infection and I think we can say "goodbye" to that tradition. Yeah this society supposed to be open to all cultures, but it's gotta have standards as well.

I think MM was just trying to say she feels the actual mutilation of the baby overshadows any "weirdness" over penis-sucking (apart from the infection part) ie the penis sucking is a secondary issue, we have bigger fish to fry.

I find all of these kinds of body mutilations on children in the name of tradition or religion or "just because".. wrong. Including the widely accepted circumcision.

but this is a whole nother level of just..wrong. I can't even imagine the risk of disease and the mindset (or potential of disease) of putting a child's genitalia in your mouth.

I am all for respecting cultural/religious norms as long as they don't hurt anyone, even if I think they are "weird", lots of things I DO might be weird to different cultures.

but I think this crosses the line of doing real harm.

I don't even particularly like ear piercing a on babies.

I have my ears pierced twice In both ear, my nose pierced and an ex nipple piercing, so I'm not against it at all!!

I just think personal choice for the child needs to come into it.

And I don't care if its 5 million years old...... Sucking circumcision wounds is sickening.

I totally agree with ear piercing babies, I was in Wal-Mart one time with my daughter who was about 3 yrs. old at the time. There was woman having her babys' ears pierced. Well they got one done [don't ask me why they didn't have two people there to do them simultaneously] and the baby started screaming and crying, quite naturally. Apparently she had to calm the baby down before they could do the other one. I later found her in the restroom trying to get her baby to stop crying so she could have the other ear pierced. She was determined to get the other ear pierced. You should have seen the look on my daughters' face.
