Whoa!........shiver...that's a scarey one! God,I cannot believe I was so stupid as to give her that thing. I feel like a negligent mother, no kidding.
Don't feel so bad! I had sworn I'd never give Hudson a rawhide when I did it anyway just cause we got it as a gift... Like I said, we are both lucky we learned the easy way, so best to forget it and move on with lesson learned...

mamie go to your local butcher or wherever you buy meat and ask for bone marrow bones. They are great for dogs to chew on, and last forever.

As for the rawhide, I dont give them to Katie very often, but when I do she's supervised. She actually hasnt had one in quite a long time. She LOVES hooves though, and I still let her have them although it makes me nervous.

Should I just get the filled hooves and take them away once she chews out the filling? Or just get some bully sticks for her and hope she likes them as much?

Bully sticks are great. My guy gets them all the time. (They are not the penis, though.) He also occasionally get pressed rawhide bones. I get them one size bigger than the recommended size because he is a strong chewer. That way, he does not break off big pieces. When it is too small for me to hold and him chew, out it goes. But, he prefers bully sticks. If he has none, then he will chew on the pressed rawhide. I never give him rawhide that is not pressed. He gets large knuckle bones too. Good place to buy these is White Dog Bone.

Why would the bulley sticks be less of a problem than Rawhide?

Well I have decided that all chews either don't last very long and add calories or if they do last, can be dangerous. The ones that last forever seem to bore Tosca. So I took the best natural advice here and got some good sized marrow bones from a butcher yesterday. Tosca is acting like she is in heaven gnawing at the thing. So, in keeping with my dog-mom neurosis, I am wondering about whether or not raw things are really safe for her in terms of bacteria. Or should I just cut it out and get a prescription for valium or something.

Anybody?

I got Smokey some raw marrow bones about a month ago. I scrapped out some of the marrow, and gave them to her. The next morning when I walked her in the park, she had diarrhea and alot of mucus in her stool. I freaked out and called the vet and the vet said " no more bones for Smokey"... In addition, I have heard that they can crack their teeth on weight bearing bones, which marrow bones are, cause they are so hard.....

I just give her a Kong toy with treats every day, as well as a Booda Bimple to chew on for her teeth which are perfectly white by the way, and some rope chews......Seems to work

Depends on the dog.

Again, they must be fed in moderation, too much at one time can make a dog sick. Especially if it's the first time ever feeding one. Start slow and work up from there if you really want to feed raw bones.

And, there are turkey/chicken necks and other bones out there, a lot of variety for many different dogs. ;)
