Oh man... I just found out my dad got laid off from his job today :(

he has been there over 15 years.... he's 61 years old so it is going to be hard for him to find another job. Although his boss/ex boss says he may only be laid off for 3 months... well thats three months without pay and why lay him off for three months? it's stupid.

He can't afford to retire just yet either.

Poor guy... he may have to sell his house that he just bought.

would he get unemployment benefits like we have here? it may truly only be a couple months. that is sometimes a necessity for a business when things are slow, but doesn't mean a total job loss. I WISH my hubby would get a few month lay-off. we could live easy on unemployment, but....no such luck since he's self employed. when my hubby is off.....there is just no paychecks. I hope it works out for your dad!!!

Did they lay off several people who have been there for that kind of time? If so, they may be doing layoffs to avoid retirement payouts.
No they are doing layoffs because they are 6 million dollars in debt.... I'm sure it won't be long before they are bankrupt completely and just close down.

still sucks though

He should be able to get unemployment although it takes at least 6 weeks for it to kick in....

His boss said he may be on lay off for 13 weeks... after that he MAY get a severance package... but not guaranteed. but it sounds like either way he won't be getting the job back.

AND... he was their out of town delivery driver... not sure how they are going to make things better with only one delivery guy now

Sounds like they are prepping to do a reorganization bankruptcy . . . one of the things that will go is severance packages and any retirement benefits employees have accrued.

Yeah I don't really know... I guess the bank called them and said cut back or we will cut you off .... so they really cut back. About half the plant lost their jobs.

Sorry to hear about that Tanya! I'll add him to my prayers. Being out of work is no fun at all.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Some employers can be really crummy towards their employees, even ones as loyal as your dad. I will send some positive thoughts your way!

Oh, and he needs to double check on that time lapse before his unemployment insurance kicks in. It's a state not a federal insurance, so it can vary from state to state, but here in TN you start collecting on it after the second week.

When our family business crashed , Tom was over 65 but I needed medical coverage ....I was completely un-insured for a few months and it was scary !!!! It was financially better for me to apply at 62 rather than wait 3 years. Sorry to say , but you're damned if you do and damned if you don't . Not fair !

I believe her dad lives in Canada. It would be a providence issue, not a state one. Also in Canada the Universal Medical Insurance varies form providence to providence.

Renee... if he can get unemployment insurance (yes he is in Canada) it is effective starting the date he is laid off... but it always takes 6 weeks for them to process the papers and start handing out the checks....

ACooper... never thought I would say this lol... but luckily my parents are seperated.... so my mom will be fine and my dad doesn't have another person to support... just himself. But it would be sad if he has to sell this house... he just bought it just over 6 months ago :(
