I was lucky to land a secretary position in a school office at a private school. I have been working there for almost a week. This is a small school.. about 100 students so during the day I have time to help teachers grade papers, take kids to recess.. etc.. However, I do have a schedule I have to stick to and part of whats on my schedule is that I visit the high-school rooms at 9:15 and ask the teacher if she needs papers graded. I bring the papers back to the office to grade and between 10:30 and 12:40 I help out with the middle school doing various tasks.

Everything is going well except there are 2 teachers that seem really annoyed at my presence and they are the 2 teachers that I help. Im not sure if the last lady that had my job did the same or at all but everytime I visit these classrooms they give me "the got to hell look" or the "why are you here look". When I do visit I always peek in the door (theres a window above the doorknob) and if they're teaching then I'll wait a few mins until they are done but if they are not teaching then I go ahead and go in. Both these ladies are on the heavy side and very tom-boyish and Im tall and thin.. I dont know if looks may have something to do with it.. I hope not.. thats so elementary-ish but still.. I dont know what Im doing wrong. Any advice that might help me overcome this fear that they hate me or anything I can do that might smooth over the rough surfaces?

Why don't you give it a while and see what happens. You also might ask each nicely that since you are new , you'd appreciate any in put from them as to are you covering your responsibity to them satisfactorily. If they're mean or nasty, bring it up with the Dean. Good luck !!

There could be all kinds of reasons they're being like that. If the person before you had been there for a long time, or if there was some scandal associated with this person leaving, it could take a long time for them to get used to a new person. So yeah, give it time. Continue being nice, even though it's hard. ;) You don't want to be the one who looks bad.

Mindy.. you have nailed it.. the lady before me was there for a long time and there was a scandal associcated with her leaving. All I know is that she left fast and pulled her daughter out of 1st grade but yes I'll still continue being nice.. although its hard.. lol

I think talking them would be the best idea. Maybe you could suggest having a set time each day when you go into their classes. Each teacher will be prepared for your arrival.

I'd just ask really nicely if anything was wrong. showing them you care enough to ask may warm them up a bit faster. just be your sweet self. :) it's only been a week, maybe they're having some trauma in their personal lives and aren't connecting with anybody right now. it's always hard being new on a job. if they don't come around...don't sweat it, it's their loss.

There is a set time when I go around. I start with high-school at 9:15 and work my way around. They are expecting me but when I show up its a little awkward. When they come by the office to make copies I make it a point to say Hi and ask them how they're doing etc..

They didnt get big by hating ice cream. I suggest you buy them each a gallon and put it in the break room freezer. Tie a big ribbon around the freezer with their names on it. I know that if I was thinking that I didnt like someone and they gave me a gallon of ice cream it would change my whole perspective. Then again, they are women and you never know how women would react to the kindest of gestures.

Eh, screw 'em. You can't expect everyone to be nice and open armed to you in any work atmosphere. Just worry more about doing your job and brush off the killjoys. LOL
