Hiya guys, Just had to tell you what happened to my little girl this morning. I only work part time, a few hours a day, so I'm usually the last one out the door. Monday is the only exception, when I have an early shift. My teenage boys are the last out on Mondays and are quite capable of getting themselves off to school. They know the routine, of making sure things are locked up, all main doors ie bedrooms, toilet/bathroom kitchen etc are closed too. The dogs have the hallways and loungeroom with their beds, and are quite happy. They also know to leave a radio on for Peanut, as he loves the noise and company.

Well you can imagine my distress when I came home 5 hours later, and found that my youngest son Joshua had gone back into his bedroom for something, Sugar must have followed him in, and then of course he comes out and shuts the door, as he knows he must do. They didn't know and my poor baby was locked in his bedroom for 5 hours. I came home to what sounded like a crying puppy :( Max was at the bedroom door crying, and when I realised in horror what had happened I let Sugar out. She was HYSTERICAL. She was crying, shaking, panting, I thought she was going to have a heart attack. She was almost hyperventilating. I quickly put them out for toilies as I do when I get home, and it took me an hour to calm her, my poor baby. After she had calmed I took them for their walk to the park, and she perked up a bit. She was very clingy though and didn't let me out of her sight. I know kids will be kids, but when they came home they were horrified when I told them. I lectured them, on working together and double checking all house checks are done before they leave.

I hope with my lecture it has been reinforced. She is ok now and sleeping at my feet. Sorry just had to share my distressful arrival home. Oh and sorry for the long winded story :D

Cheers

Carolyn

Poor Sugar!

But if you don't mind me asking, why did Sugar stress out so bad just because she was locked in your son's room?

(My dog would have probably torn up the trash can looking for yummies, and then just gone to sleep.)

I am glad everything is okay but dont come down too hard on the boys, things happen and much worse things could happen to a pet then being locked in a bedroom. My cats have jumped in the dressers and had the doors shut on them, they have all been locked in bedrooms when the wind blew a door shut.

None of my dogs would be happy to be locked in a room, but they would have beds to lay on in each and even without access to food and water, 5 hours is not that big a deal.

Sweet, thats a good question. Sugar has always been a sensetive dog, and the only thing I can think of, is that she would have had no idea why she was in there, and she could obviously hear Max too, cause he was crying at the door. They know the bedrooms are no go zones, except for mine and hubby's cause they sleep in there at night, so I'm guessing she is like, what in tarnation am I doing in here, I know I'm not allowed to, then it's, uh oh I can't get out, and I know the kids are gone. It shocked me too, I've never seen her like that, and she was soooooooo thirsty, she nearly downed half a bucket LOL.

Elissa I know what you mean, but it gets frustrating, cause kids answers to everything are, Oh I forgot, Or oh I didn't think. We try to teach them that some things, just can't be blown away with "I forgot". I try to explain to them, that if they have trouble remembering things, then use the notes system. They liked that idea lol so we have a list of house checks now where they can see it, and to remind them for what they need to do, before they leave :)

ETA thanks for the kind thoughts and hugs everyone, I have passed them onto my baby and she seems now, no worse the wear for her "ordeal". :)

What may seem like nothing to one dog is a huge deal to another. Just like with people, some are scared of water and some are practically fish. She was obiously terrified of being shut off from the rest of the pack. Poor thing.

I had a cat who lived in a basement before I took her in. I tell you, she not only would NEVER go into my basement, she scruffed a kitten who tried to go down there. The basement was her nightmare de tutti nightmare, yet other cats couldn't wait to explore it. Every animal has it's own gremlins just like people.
