I took Ripley out for a quick walk yesterday, and he happened to spot a lizard and go chasing after it while he was still on the leash. He hit the end of the leash on his harness and reeled back, screaming. It looks to me like the harness bruised his bony little chest, since it has no padding there.

I was wondering if anyone makes harnesses like the ones they use in agitation/bitework, but in Papillon size? The padded breastplate is exactly what he'd need.

If they don't make those in his size (i doubt they do, but it doesnt hurt to ask, lol) does anyone with small dogs have any suggestions for durable harnesses that won't hurt him?

There are places online that custom-make them. I'm sure a teeny-tiny one for His Ripliness wouldn't be that expensive.

I swear I've seen one before...also, this Shiba Inu pup at the new/old place had a wide mesh harness that looked like it was bruise-free.

This has happened to Mija too she had like a little v mark on her little chest. I freaked alittle because shes so tiny so what I did was I cut the fingers off one of those gloves that one size fits all and made a padding for her on the harness.

Hmm the mesh harness is a good idea too. I will check out places online to see if they will custom make one for him. Thanks! :)

I'm also buying one of those spiked (blunt, of course - don't want him taking an eye out!) harley-davidson collars for him, Renee. It may not be much of a shield but it'll definitely boost his already swollen ego. :D

you could just get a head halter so he won't be able to jump at anything and hurt himself (or whatever he's after). the head halter pulls the head off to the side instead of allowing him to jump or lunge forward. it's worked like a charm with my Lab. she used to lunge forward (in a hurry to get to her potty spot and such) and she'd rub the hair off of her chest cause she was constantly applying pressure.

I have a great dane who used to forget her place. Then I got something called a gentle leader. They make them in all sizes. I cannot say enough good things about this collar. They come in all sizes. They fit so that when the dog pulls on the collar, it tugs their head downward and back, kinda like a halter. With some training time, I never get dragged, no matter how enticing the lure is.

Gentle Leader

I posted wrong the first time so am repeating myself. I have a great dane I got when she was 10 mo's old and had been penned for a while. She was very aware she weighed as much as me and used it. Then I got something called the gentle leader. It fits high on the neck and around the muzzle, attaching to the leash under the head. When she lunged, it tugged her head down and to the side. You do not jerk it (there is a dvd that comes with it to teach you how to train) but let it gently pull them back. But like a choke collar, it loosens immediately when they stop and since a dog automatically pulls back from what has them, the dog tends to stop or (like my Keira) back up when the collar begins to correct.

I can't say enough good things about this collar contraption. The dog can pant, bark, drink, eat. It is NOT a muzzle. But my strong girl stays by my side now no matter how enticing the lure. They come in all sizes.
