I believe in the US an employer must allow 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that was a federal issue)
At the clinic where I worked, I got 8 weeks of paid leave and could take the remaining 4 unpaid.
My husband actually gets one week of unpaid leave, but still....it doesn't hurt him or count against sick days or vacation days. So although he's swapping some shifts to have time off, it's nice to know that in the even of an emergency, he can take the time off without penalty.
